Shame on the IAAF, Coe and his (British) minions

Editor's note: The video shows that the broadcasters mentioned Ingebrigtsen's name 42 times and the medallists names 46 times.

Best thing I've read all day.
Brilliant.
Always the victim, always complaining.
Jakob is by far the biggest star in that U20 field. So obviously he will be mentioned more than the others.

A) Very valid point in that the commentators should've been better informed.
B) Ingebritsen is the reigning European 1500m and 5000m champion, so I would say he was on more familiarity and interest to a European audience.
C) Where exactly do you find out as much info about Mengesha, Worku and Chelimo as you do about Ingebritsen? Extremely difficult to learn about those athletes in comparison to a reigning European Champion.
In summary, yes they should've done better with things like getting the athletes nationalities right, referring to them as 'the lead pack' rather than the 'africans' but at the same time you have understand the context and the audience somewhat. Commentating on a running race, especially before it starts and in the opening couple of laps is pretty boring, so they fill it with talk about the better known athletes.
I'm sure if you could find an Ethiopian, Kenyan or Ugandan commentary of the race it would be quite different in some regards but also give more mention to Ingebritsen than is typical for a 12th place finisher.
Well, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia et al could have sent a broadcast team to the event and provided proper coverage for their athletes
Scratch that, luckily I've done the research for you.
Mengesha has raced 4 track meets in 3 years.
Tadese Worku's IAAF profile lists 2 races from 1 track meeting last year.
Googling their names comes up with almost nothing prior to this weekends race. Well, I did find one article in a Greek running magazine on Mengesha. In Greek. Useful.
Google Worku and a bunch of random Facebook profiles come up before anything to do with the athlete.
Compare that to the amount we know about Jakob and how many times people have seen him race. Of course he's going to be mentioned a lot.

Even during a race where he’s languishing in 12th?

So because he finished 12th, he should not have been mentioned before he finished 12th? Your racism towards white people is annoying.
The announcers didn't know whether he would finish 1st or 12th while they were commentating

Sure, how were they to know that he would be facing about 20 grown ass men?
Whenever a supposedly favored athlete is in trouble they get mentioned.

Your hero was shown to be decidedly average and undeserving of the attention. For the longest time the announcers were thinking he was saving his powder waiting for the right time to surge past the leaders and leave them in his wake like he often does in European XCs. They couldn’t hide their disappointment upon realising he was barely hanging on.
Sounds like they know their audience. Talk about him and get attention. Talk about the East Africans and watch people tune out and the sport continue to die.
You should watch this race and count the times they say Athing Mu.
Isn't it like 4 AM right now in Kenya?
El keniano showing his racism like always. When will that racist be banned?
Noone cares about africans running fast. There is also no market for brands there. The africans might still be happy running and winning but they are killing the sport and it will hit them as well
You definitely have an inferiority complex. Get help.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
