Well before his time. Trying to kill off track distance running simply because Westerners are uncompetitive, and the ‘wrong’ kind of people keep winning is going deprive true fans of the spectacle of this talented young man attacking Kenenisa Bekele’s records. Proof positive that ‘Lord’ Sebastian Coe is no friend of athletics.
I wonder if 99.99% swimming and cycling will try to diversify too.

IAAF/Seb Coe’s Boneheaded (possibly bigoted) Decision Pushes Generational Talent Selemon Barega to the Roads.

A worse person? Probably not. A worse victim mentality? Yes. -
Good points!

Last time I checked, "westerners" didn't make the decision, Coe did. And Coe is in Europe which is directly north of Africa. "westerners" had nothing to do with the decision and calling westerners "uncompetitive" is not only inaccurate but insulting to the athletes in those countries. Maybe you are just upset that Kenya went home DEVASTATED by Uganda?

Can you stop being a drama queen? Barega is talented but he is young....but absolutely no where near conversation to attack Bekele's records. The kid didn't even win world juniors last year and you are comparing him to the GOAT?

It has nothing to do with diversifying....they took away 1 distance event. And left the rest. And it's only being taken away from the diamond league circuit, not all of track and field.
Again, quit being a drama queen and making a false narrative. -

I don't see why this sounds so unlikely to you. Barega ran 12:43 last year. It's the fastest time since Bekele. It's faster that Geb's crazy WR from Zurich 1995. It's hard to bet against 12:37. But it will be broken eventually, and Barega has a chance to do it.
And of course the changes in events are due to racism. Not necessarily direct "we don't like black people" racism. But since when is it ever that simple? The fact that distance races are a bunch of black guys from Africa makes the rich white audience (except LetsRun!) tune out and not care, it makes the media call an elite athlete "winner" instead of her name, it makes Nike dress everybody in the same uniform and not try to distinguish personalities. And all of that creates a vicious cycle. -

Oh my god can we stop with pulling the racist card CONSTANTLY. How soft is everyone becoming these days? "You don't agree with me? Then you are racist." It's the perfect way of expressing your disdain for someone/something without being intelligent enough to make an argument. "I know, I'll just say racism and then anyone who disagrees is racist. I'll call them rich and white too just to make sure everyone knows how racist the 5k is."
I can tell you with 100% certainty that 99%+ of the world's population, black white brown yellow, does not give a flying F*** about the 5k. Let that sink in for a minute. The world is 7.7 billion people and less than 1 percent (77 million) care. It's likely FAR LESS than 77 million, but for the sake of not trying to roast you too bad (because I want to see your soft reply), I'll say 1%. You can't say that about NFL. Do you think that Asia doesn't have an NFL of their own because they are racist against black people? No, it's because nobody in Asia gives a f*** about football.

"the rich white audience" LOL what are you talking about? You know how Haile G grew up running? By listening to the olympics on his radio and getting inspired. (source: The Greatest by Jim Denison) People of all colors watch track and field, particularly distance events - the point to cut the 5k has nothing to do with the skin color of the audience, it has to do with the lack of audience. Just because 15,000 people go on letsrun everyday doesn't mean there is a huge demand globally to watch the 5k. This is another attempt at you being too lazy to create a real argument so you cry out something racist.

Last Olympics non-black people:
1. swept the podium in the 1500 1st 2nd 3rd.
2. Went 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th, 10th, 11th in the marathon.
3. 5th in the 10k.
And that's just the olympics. You can look through endless meet results and find non-black runners all over the place. I'd say that black people might just be the minority in running! But don't take my word just yet, I am just making a guess. I haven't seen the numbers, just going off observations from hundreds of 5k runners I have seen over a few decades at both races I attended and races I have seen on TV/youtube both domestic and international.
And with that, I urge you to be a better human being. Don't cry racist because you want to express your disdain for someone/something but are not intelligent enough to come up with an argument to express those emotions. When used inappropriately, accusing racism is not only harmful to society as a whole, but it also makes you look like you have no idea what you are talking about. -
If one looks at Selemon Barega's 3000m & 5000m PB's, one would think the new event selection is unfair. Based on my observations and experiences, 3000m & 5000m are more closely correlated than any other two events. Since Barega is a 12:43.xx 5000m, I have every reason to believe Barega will be able to race sub-7:28 3000m soon. Once Barega races fast 3000m performances, stress over 5000m & 10000m will soon be forgotten.
-
He just nearly made the podium in a hilly XC race on nothing but smoldering hate. Train him to run hills (Hellen Obiri can coach him, her technique is perfect) and he will be unbeatable there and can forget the roads.
-
Actually his interview was somehat confusing because first off Barega said he would go to the roads, but then followed that later by stating he would aim for the 5k w.r.
Isn't that what he said ?

High IQ decision from the Lord.
Italians can take their "teenage" drug cheats to the roads, where they can chase 26:40 10k times or whatever. Keep this crap off the track. Good riddance Barega, Rhonex... hope many more will follow. -

I think Seb is doing a great job. I agree , 100m-1500m is the heart of Track . I also support how he came to assist Paula Radcliffe during the drug witch hunt hoax. -

Right. Openly declaring her innocent before looking at her test results, and then insisting on an internal in-house "investigation" by his subordinates (who knew their boss declared Paula's "innocence"). Nothing could go wrong. -

I’m glad you find racism “entertaining”. Many of us who’ve experienced it at various points of our lives would take a slightly differing view. -
