The idea that food is needed to get through a marathon is another piece of advertising disguised as "science" that's been drilled into you by the sports nutrition industry. Like the false premise of a "30 minute anabolic window," it's just another way of getting people to part with their money for products they don't really need.
Meanwhile World Records are being broken cause of maximizing carbohydrate intake. Paula Radcliffe had it figured out 15+ years ago. Now the Africans are catching on, at least the men are.
Carb fuelling mid race is a minor factor in the marathon world record of today. In these cases it is just a 2 hour and a bit run. The gains from taking on carbs could only give a very small, negligible benefit.

Gotta love the guys in the background just hanging out by their car. Such a different scene as compared to races today.
Yes and I took a piss along a house by the starting line. That year was the largest marathon field ever with 1,500. I really can’t imagine the hassel of racing a major today.
So true. And those 1,500 entrants or so seemed unmanagable. I remember local road races where the fields gott into triple digits, barely, and afterwards we'd be talking about how big the field was and wondering if the sport could survive when race fields were getting that big.
The reason I took a leak like I did was the junior high restroom by the start had long lines. The race was not prepared for those numbers.
I did the same in a clump of trees next to the junior high. I was far from alone.
Can you imagine the logistics to run Boston today? Seems not worth the effort.

You would totally have to take a dump in a porta potty.

Still happens today. A few weeks ago before a small marathon, I needed to take a leak. And the porta johns had a long line. So I jogged about 200m from the start line to take a leak in the tree line. And there was about half a dozen other people, doing the same thing.
It was water, water, water. Although I remember in the '79 San Blas half marathon, by the 14th kilometer, I took a sip of beer from a spectator that offered.
In the 60’s & 70’s it was never an issue until people found out they could sell special drinks, gels carbo loading, fuel belts, etc. Some old timers Jim McDoungh and Ted Corbett told me to defizz coke and try that on long runs. They told me this after I faded (badly) in the final stages of the Peekskill to Yonkers ultra. I did it a few times, but never really felt good during the races. I never really felt like I needed it.

Here is Neil Cusack the 1974 winner and looks like he doesn’t have a bib.
How is that even possible. What if he missed a timing mat. Derek Murphy would have had a field day with this guy.
Timing mat? WTH is that? There were no timing mats.
I remember back in 78 some guys used hard tac with bacon grease we didn’t need any gels.
Ultra buddy of mine ground up caffeine pills in defizzed rootbeer soda for his ultras. I'm not sure but I think he also dissolved ultrafine bartenders sugar in his witches brew.
Is the 80s cocaine was everywhere now that’s how ya run a race kids.
My friend's dad raced in the early 80s. He ate Sweet Tarts since they contain dextrose
Here is a short documentary about Bill Rodgers at the 1977 Boston Marathon. At 9:25 in, Bill's wife explains how she's headed to Ashland to hand him a bottle of ERG ("Electrolyte Replacement with Glucose").
100% worth watching the whole thing. Even though it wasn't Bill's day, the rest of his year went incredibly well, and he went on to win Boston the next three years.

No timing mats, water only in marathon, not in training. Boston only had water. Finished feeling like shite! Did a shite in basement of Prudential ctr! Crawled to bah! Drank. Ran the next day, raced in 2 weeks. Did it cuz that’s the way it was! Had to break 2:50!
I worked full time still running upwards of 150 miles a week. Ran twice a day Monday thru Saturday and once on Sunday.
