He comes in third in 1:09 and loses to Jesse Thomas who is a triathlete and 39.
What gives? Where did the speed go?

He needs to quit Veganism, and start eating some red meat, if he is serious about his running career.
Do you realize how fast a 1:09 half-marathon is? For f*** sake people. First, go out and better the times you belittle and then make your comments. The sad reality is FAR too many runners haven't touched that type of time and think it is a sh*t time. It isn't. You have to move to run a 1:09. Yes, you need some speed to run that time. It hasn't gone anywhere. Sage has run around 2:16 or so for the marathon. It is not like you duplicate these types of efforts every other week...
Speed got NOTHING to do with half-marathon performance. His 30m fly or even 400m speed is practically irrelevant for his half-marathon performance.
He did bad because he is focusing on ultras, which means lots of long, easy mileage without any workouts. As a result, his lactate threshold which is way more important for a HM than for ultras or marathons tanked quite a bit. But this is all planned - he doesn't care about his HM performance, he wants to improve in ultras so he can actually win some big international races.
He didn't have a chance. Thomas was carrying enough food for 8 hours of training in his fanny pack. You can't compete with that.

Sage, you need to calm down. Look at it from this way. You have a half PB of 1:04:32 and a marathon PB of 2:16:52*. You should still be hitting close to, or faster than those times at your age of 33.
Look at your marathon progression over the years:
2018 2:19:50 Houston, TX (USA) 14 JAN 2018
2016 2:20:32 Houston, TX (USA) 17 JAN 2016
2014 2:22:15 Carlsbad, CA (USA) 19 JAN 2014
2012 2:18:24 Houston, TX (USA) 14 JAN 2012
2010 2:19:18 Chicago, IL (USA) 10 OCT 2010
2008 2:30:06 New York, NY (USA) 02 NOV 2008
2007 2:21:43 Duluth, MN (USA) 16 JUN 2007
You are running the same as you were in college.
*Marathon PB was on a downhill course.

Letsrun: Where a tool who never ran a half, criticizes a guy who ran 1:09
Think your Acne meds are causing problems for you boyo
Obviously 1:09 is fast for most people but for a sponsored athlete not so much. What did Walmsley run in his recent half? And how do you lose to an older triathlete. Sage is a cool dude but his performances are going downhill.
Surprised that you are surprised.
Soon he's man job will be posting his usual pulp in social media.

And he'll be here any moment posting vegan nonsense, as usual.
This guy is a very good runner and an asset to this site. Lay off wannabes.
Just jogged it at his 100 mile race pace.
According to his strava this was a marathon pace workout. He did a moderate paced 6 miles after for a 20 mile morning with warmup included. He said this was harder than he'd like but the man is still performing given his current mileage. He's a brave soul to run a half knowing his haters. Last year he ran the 15k. I commend him for not being afraid of a$$holes on letsrun and being so transparent. Keep doing what you do Sage!
MP workout, obvi!

At least this is an answer. I was just wondering why the slow effort.
My question is could Sage have beaten Jesse Thomas if he went all out on the day? What about if he tapered?

They were tied at the halfway point. It looks like he got beat. Why not speed up and get the win if you could?
First off...for the record the course was pretty hilly. Like over 600-700'+ of climbing.
So there's that....for everyone's times. Jordan Hassay jumped in the 15km and ran like 51-min as a workout.
No, I would not have been able to beat Jesse Thomas if I went all out on the day. He ran like 1:08 low and won by quite a bit.
The guy is a stud and in great shape for a 39 year old. Keep in mind at Stanford he did run like a 8:35 steeple and has been a pro triathlete. He ran great...I think he's targeting the Eugene marathon. Lauren won the half as well.
I was supposed to run at goal marathon pace and wanted it to feel easy/controlled....I also wanted to win. It was not "workout/tempo effort" and so I am disappointed and not in the shape I want to be in obviously. I ran pretty freaking hard to run that 1:09:0x. Ave. heartrate was 163. All the data is on Strava.com. It was a big disappointment.
To tell you the truth i've been struggling with some back issues/running form issues. It hasn't been too bad and I am mostly healthy hitting 100-120mpw, but for sure my speed has been hampered and its been frustrating. I came off an injury in late Nov./Dec. from what I think was implications from a blunt/impact fall at the Otter Trail race but have been training pretty well since January (got 2nd at Moab Red Hot 55km last month), but for sure not stellar. I'm working on it and looking forward to the ultra season though (Comrades etc.) as this year of racing progresses. I have been very fortunate to have the time and energy and resources to train.
Sure I want to be "faster" and run an OTQ marathon again, but realize I am sponsored to be an ultra-mountain runner....not a road marathon runner. Me running a 2:17 or another 2:19-2:20 doesn't really help my career. Of course I've love to say I'm a "3-time Olympic Trials Qualifier" instead of a "2-time Olympic Trials Qualifier" though! I may be "slow and old" to your standards, but I'm in this running thing for the long haul! Enjoy the sport, live running as a lifestyle for health, fitness and fun and don't be afraid to state your goals. People can criticize me all they want...I can only be transparent and honest with you guys.
He’s gotten way slower than Jim Walmsley. Crazy to see how veganism can destroy a running career.
Why would anyone listen to the bulk of the idiots on here? It's not like more than 1% can run remotely fast. Pros very rarely criticize other pros, so it's the clowns on here that have to do that. Like the guys who actually believe they are fast and who have trained for years to barely 2:40.
