Give it a shot. There is a decent night life in LA. Rams and Chargers are building a stadium.

It's definitely affordable. People are going to come on here and rip on LA, but California is over-crowded for a reason.
Yes, we're overcrowded because of illegal immigration. We now have 40% of the nation's welfare cases (illegals have kids on this side of the border in order to secure benefits). LEGAL immigrants in the US are at 72% welfare use, 80% total using some type of social programs for dollars, and the numbers are worse in CA.
$150K in L.A. will be like making $75K where you live currently. The weather though is pretty good here, and the gangs are badass, with the LAPD, LA County Sheriff, LA Times and State government having all been caught covering up actual crime statistics, allowing the salvas and La Eme to operate with impunity.
Burbank more expensive than Santa Monica? Are you on crack? Also, who the hell really likes Burbank?

I'm not saying you are wrong because I don't know but can you cite sources to back those figures.
Thanks.
All these people touting Pasadena and the San Gabriel Mountains: Tell the OP where to smog goes. Maybe you’ve been there too long and can’t see it. Go outside right now. If you can’t see the mountains, it’s smoggy. You shouldn’t be running. OP: If you’re not near the beach, there’s no reason to be in SoCal. If you can’t afford the beach, you can’t afford SoCal.
Smog isnt that bad. I can see the mountains. The AQI is usually below 50 here. Every once in a while you get a bad day...
OP: Not only do people in Pasadena have a short memory for smog, they also forget how hot it gets. It’s not usually the hottest place in the country, but you can get well into the hundreds for much of the summer.
And although it looks close on a map, it can take a long, long time to get downtown if you’re driving during normal commute times. Oh, who are we kidding, there’s always going to be traffic on the 110. It’s one of the world’s first freeways and also one of the worst.
Yes. Go look. Rentals and homes are generally more expensive in Burbank. Burbank is where all the studios are. Santa Monica, unless you are right on the ocean, is surprisingly cheaper, especially the apartments. Burbank is actually really nice. I would live there in a heartbeat.

Wouldn't the Ohio guys want to research public transport? If OP works downtown wouldn't there be express buses from the outlying areas to downtown? I would think one of the top research priorities would be public transport, particularly in LA.
Am I off base on this?
PS. Flagpole, welcome back brother. SOME of us missed you.
Thanks, brother!

Honestly, I have never given it a thought. LA isn't like Chicago, or I'm assuming NY or New England.. everyone drives in LA. I see those buses driving down the freeway in the center lane, but I couldn't tell you if it's a decent form of transportation or not.
Most people do whatever they can to have an electric car, or get the passes to drive in the express lanes. Or just sit on the freeway for two hours each way, everyday. Depending on where you live of course. LA is just insanely large geographically.. public transit isn't very popular from what I know. It's almost like they built out the city, then realized they forgot to put in public transit. Elon Musk is working on that tunnel project though.. theoretically.
go bucks
public transport in LA? buses? um.....no. they exist but are not used for anything serious, and for good reason.
Only option i would look into would be the new light rail from Santa Monica to down town.
I might be wrong, but I've never met anyone who used buses for long commutes in LA. Or used buses at all.

Average home price in Santa Monica: $1.7 million

https://www.zillow.com/burbank-ca/home-values/The crack in Ohio must be good. OP, since your also from Ohio, you might like Burbank just fine. I’d take it in a minute over Ohio, but there’s no comparison to Santa Monica. People who can afford to live elsewhere do not live in Burbank. Burbank is somewhere you go to work (or drive through on your way to work).

You can't go with averages because Santa Monica has some crazy expensive homes that are on the ocean. Like I said earlier, "unless you are right on the ocean, is surprisingly cheaper, especially the apartments."

Here are the houses for sale in Burbank for under $800k. There are currently 45; you can find a 2000 square foot home.
https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/Burbank_CA/type-single-family-home/price-na-800000Here are the houses in Santa Monica that are currently for sale for less than $800k.
https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/Santa-Monica_CA/type-single-family-home/price-na-800000Oh wait, there aren’t any, because Santa Monica is fricken expensive. Are you sure you’ve been to Santa Monica? Do you maybe have it confused with Santa Ana?
Congrats on the job offer!
Don’t listen to the letsrun snowflakes. They’re either too weak, afraid, boring, or finacially inept to live in SoCal. Like usual, only a couple of posters are informed and can read a post. For the record, I moved out here 22 years ago from Iowa and haven’t looked back.
Since your job is in DTLA you have flexibility on where to live. You should not live in Burbank or Santa Monica unless you want to hate your life because of the commute (SaMo) or where you live (Borebank). Northeast LA (Echo Park, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Highland Park, Eagle Rock) , Little Tokyo/ Arts Distict, and DTLA are a mix of hipster, affluence, and old school LA. You could take the Goldline Metro (train) from Highland Park, Eagle Rock, or Pasadena to DTLA if you choose. Hancock Park/Miracle Mile is another great area within commuting distance of DTLA.
I’ve lived in the Pasadena area for most of the time here and only during the wildfires last year was it unfit to run. As for the heat, you learn to run in the mornings or evenings and rarely deal with humidity. I’ll take training here over the Midwest, South, and East Coast.

It's the median home price that is $1.7 million in Santa Monica not the mean vs the median home price in Burbank of $833k. The median is not impacted by very expensive outliers.
Here is some more data - it's 2 years old but you get the idea.

As long as you enjoy your current living situation, stay where you are.

Currently I live in Columbus, Ohio and I make 116k a year. I'm a software engineer. I have an offer for 150k for doing basically the same thing in Los Angeles, however I've never been there. The weather definitely appeals to me, as does all the opportunity for outdoor sports, be it running or cycling or just on the beach.
So what do the LRC faithful think? Is LA worth it and is it affordable at 150k?
