It's fake news because the author intentionally changed what happened to bolster his article about Flanagan.

How do we know that?
Did you read the article?
I saw the title of this thread on the trending page and thought, "This sounds like rojo clickbait."
Did not disappoint. FYI - fake news this is not. Perhaps an error, but fake news implies deception or an intentionally false story, not a minor error. You have swallowed the right wing nut job pill.

Robert, please heed these words. The more you stay off your own site, the better. Make Letsrun great again, not the cesspool it has become.

Ok. So they both slowed down for each other in the same race. Well at a minimum he should have mentioned that later in the same race she got the favor returned to her?
That basically makes my point...
What the heck? You post a thread saying the NYT got something wrong. Someone posts evidence showing that what they wrote was actually correct (i.e. you're the one propagating so-called "fake news"). And your response is that this "basically makes your point," because they should have mentioned something else too?
Dude. Wow.
Seriously! Change the title of your post at least..

Yes, I guess he could change it to:
"More Fake News: In article unrelated to running NY Times reports that Shalane Flanagan slowed down for Amy Cragg at 2016 US Olympic Marathon Trials but neglects to mention that Amy also slowed down when Shalane struggled."
Sounds a bit moronic, but at least it would be accurate.

By using your brain.
Flanagan looked like death when Cragg slowed down for her. Had she pushed the pace earlier she likely wouldn't have finished. Didn't Flanagan need to be helped into a wheelchair?

You use your brain too much. Give it a rest. Just read the article. It is not an article about Shalane Flanagan, it is an article about how helping your rivals leads to improvements in your own performance.
The article is spot on. Most people would agree that if Amy Craigg was not there, Shalane would have likely DNF. Helping Amy early on in the race got her a spot on the olympic team.
Our Worst Fears Realized
And at the end of the day, the NYTimes has a special place in the fake news camp.
Under USATF RULE 144 ASSISTANCE TO ATHLETES it states in part 7 states that no competitor shall be allowed to receive assistance from anyone during the progress of the competition. Thus, there appears to be grounds to disqualify both Amy and Shalane. Therefore, the finishing order should have been:
Women’s Marathon: The top three all made it in 2016. But the USATF WILL NOT honor the correct top 3 finish at US Olympic Trials due to their monumental failure to enforce their own Rule 144(7):
1 Amy Cragg - Would have been DQ for aiding Shalane
2 Desiree Linden - Would make team - Our Worst Fears Realized!
3 Shalane Flanagan - Would have been DQ for aiding Amy
4 Kara Goucher - Would make team - One of the darkest days in history for US distance fans!!
5 Janet Bawcom - Would make team - An Absolute Travesty!!!

No no no. That's when we used to like Des. Then she went out and won boston, in bad weather. What a loser, I hate her for that.
People... I recommend the brilliant and hilarious 'Scoop' by Evelyn Waugh. Also, look up the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect.
Or, as they used to say, don't believe everything read in the papers. Ring a bell?

welcome to letsrun. if you thought the brojos were in the business of journalism, you were mistaken.
Not fake news. They just got that backwards, assuming that it must have been the more credentialed athlete slowing down for the less credentialed (Cragg's got a 2:20 pr now, or 2:21, though, very impressive!). They have a spot in the paper every day where they list corrections.
Yes, a perfect example of fake news was produced by sites that ran stories both that 1) Obama was a Muslim and 2) Obama was heavily influenced by his radical Christian pastor, Jeremiah Wright. They had to know that he could not both be Muslim and Christian, yet they ran both stories with no indication of their incompatibility. That is intentional fake news, not an innocent mistake or partial truth.

No, it's called getting hits for the site, period. And...it worked;)
