Came from way back and won.
Crazy.
See the other thread for details. We'll have a recap later.

[i]LRC update: While the winner Belay Tilahun was not part of the elite field, and just ran with his bib 1163 on this chest, he is most definitely and elite runner. He's run 27:11 for 10,000m on the track and was 4th at the Ethiopian Olympic Trials in 2016. He's run 61:51 for the half marathon and said the most money he ever made was winning the San Silvestre New Year's Eve Road Race in Brazil this past December for $25,000. He also won the Bix 7 last year in the US. Tilahun was entered by the West Side Runners, a local club in the race, but he lives in Addis Ababa, and has never run an NYRR event before.
We changed the title of the thread. It initially was entitled, "Holy smoly: A non-elite just won the United Airlines NYC Half 3"
Holy smoly: A non invited elite just won the United Airlines NYC Half

Not exactly rojo he is 27:11 man on the track

Settle down, rojo, he's certainly elite without stretching the definition one bit.
-
NYC Half needs a better elite athlete coordinator.
-
Now we know why the IAAF and USATF are raising their standards. This guy is not elite and Rojo, the IAAF and USATF are on the same page.
-
will he get paid?
-
Whats your definition of elite? Does this win make him suddenly elite?
There are probably dozens of unknown elites out there in E. Africa that just havent had a chance to showcase their skills. -
D. Monti will explain why a 62 guy who has raced one 15km in the past year didn't get on the race promotion list. His other 2018 race was a DNF
-
rojo trolling his own forum again...

He's pointing out that he didn't have an "elite" bib for the race -
To get clicks. However, shame on me. If someone wins the NYC Half, they are probably a decent runner...
-
He wasn't one of the elite/invited athletes.

The winner was not in the elite field as noted below. I updated first post with info below:

Okay, a total nobody then. :-))) -
More funny business from West Side Track Club, entering an elite Ethiopian runner who hadn't run in NYRR before. Remember years back with their entrant in Club Champs, who won without having run NYRR before, which isn't allowed. They can get someone in to non-club champs meets for the first time, of course, but if you're paying your athletes or they're not training with you, how is that in the spirit of the amateur club points race?
They should decide what kind of club they want to be. -

He wasn't an invited elite athlete for the race. Perhaps I should have non-Invited elite? I'll change it to that to make you happy.
I knew he wasn't a joe blow. The reason why i wrote "holy smoly" is I wanted to draw attention to it. If I had to have a complaint of the NYRR, I'd say it's that there races are often a bit choreographed. But I don't really blame them. They know it's not very good story telling to invite 10 runners no one knows to run a race. So they try to tell stories. The problem is when you have almost no truly elite males in a race, someone may notice that and enter on their own and take down the 20k.
Free market baby.
But the whole choreographed nature is why it's not hard to get top 10 in NY. People will say "I got 10th in NY and I'll think to myself, "How many elite Africans were in the race?" So stats like "There were 4 American sin the top 10 in NY (Boston or Chicago)- the first time since 19**"- don'tnecessarily mean all that much if the spots are 7-8-9-10 and 3 of the 8 Africans dropped out. -

Seriously though, who says holy smoly
