Are college athletes drug tested?

I was tested at NAIA nationals, for everything on the banned substances list.

Ran D1 at a mid-major (circa 2000). We’d be told the night before by a trainer we had to go for drug testing the next morning (6am). I remember collecting my pee with a chaperone watching, and then standing in line with athletes from other sports to give it for processing. I recall the football players having highly diluted pee cups, as if they’d been trying to drink a lot of water that night to flush out whatever they were taking.

I looked at this thread thinking the OP meant performance-enhancing drugs, and I believe he did. It sounds like the answer is no. Recreational drugs are meaningless in this context, as are tests by the school itself (also for recreational drugs). The actual NCAA organization testing for the same drugs WADA tests for doesn't happen from what I'm reading. Back in RWTB days, Goucher talks about it. Clearly hadn't happened yet then; thought something may have changed. Apparently not.

What's the penalty if a student-athlete tests positive for a PED? And if it's a recreational drug (e.g. marijuana) is it a lessor penalty than a PED positive?

Everyone makes mistakes. There are different mistakes. But it is important to provide support. If you notice that someone is taking drugs or drugs you can help them. You don't need much for that. Answers already in here but generally the NCAA tests athletes across all divisions and sports but usually came down to 1 football player and 2-3 other athletes per year.

Big D1 programs have a lot to lose so they pay for and administer their own tests. Usually as a track guy everyone on my team got tested once per year on average. Some guys could get it 3 times a year and some none. But most were once per year. Not based on ability at all.

They never told us what they tested for but most assumed it was recreational drugs.

Big benefit of these colleges testing? They can hand out their own punishments.

I went to a big D1 that's a favorite around here, and can confirm that nearly half our XC team smoked weed now and then, or more.

I wasn't among that half, but I had longer hair than anyone else.

Yes. The school and conference can conduct tests as well as the NCAA.

Tested on average three times: once by the school, Big Ten and NCAA.

The NCAA was random selection, Big Ten was varsity only (I think) and the school did it to be annoying.

Trainers had to witness the pee coming out to ensure the sample was not tainted. At the time, the NCAA had the specific gravity test whatever that means.
