All five of the families have some influence in Staten island and have for a long time. The Bonanno family has long had the most prominent role. There have been many, many prominent mobsters who lived on Staten Island.

Look up the trash business in NYC. Looks up the unions. Construction, cement, etc, etc. Plus, yeah, drugs, lonesharking, etc.

Saw this on the news this morning. Pretty crazy, they just shot him in the driveway with his wife and child home, then drove off. Sounded like something out of The Godfather. Apparently it was the first major mob killing in like thirty years.

I know they got him on extortion charges about ten years ago but that’s it, don’t think he served that long. I’m pretty sure a lot of the high profile mob bosses have lived in Staten Island over the years.

1) How can everyone know who the head of the mob is and he goes about operating in plain sight? Figured today's law enforcement could trace the guys cash enough that the head of the mob could not be well known and go about his business. Or wiretap all his phones.

Some years back a cousin of mine got a job as a cop on Staten Island right after he married a woman whose father was , maybe still is, a big guy in the Mafia.

Mafia houses are parodies of themselves. At least 2.6 million in SI buys much more than the 2.2 million shed that was the topic of another thread.

Sidetrack, but mob related. When I lived in Boston my neighbor worked at TV38. She asked me to go with her to going away party for one of her colleagues at work. The women was leaving Boston to return to Long Island to care for her sick mother. As it turns out she was the daughter of Carmine Galante, recipient of one of the most famous mob hits ever. His daughter didnt know what her dad did for a living until the crime scene photo was on the front page of every newspaper in America.

Considering how many murders there are in general in New York and most other big cities, the government should take advantage and create a "he was a known mob boss" defense that can lead to acquittal or reduced charges or sentences. Then people into murdering will have an incentive to kill the mob bosses instead of less deserving victims.

I grew up living across the street from a mobster who was fairly well known. Everybody loved the guy. He treated his neighbors...especially the kids....great.
