Someone explain to me because I genuinely can't figure this one out, how can USATF now allow people into the marathon trials who wouldn't meet the olympic standard if they are required to send the winners (first 3 podium and then next 2 alternates) to the olympics?
Because you have a day like Boston 2018 where people who typically wouldn't win, do win.
Basically USATF will have to exclude anyone who either doesn't make the world rankings, or doesn't make the new crazy time standard, or doesn't make top 5 in IAAF gold event or top 10 at a marathon major.
If you previously OTQ by the B-standard but not top 5 at IAAF gold or top 10 marathon major, and you by some miracle made the top 5 in trials, they would HAVE to send you to the Olympics but then you would not be allowed to race.
Or am I missing something?
