Well, if you can run 1:23, then going out in 59 (128.x pace for 600, and roughly comparable to a 1:57-58) isn't a bad idea at all. However, sometimes your legs are dead and sometimes the training isn't there yet for an 800m. Her coach knew what he was talking about it seems when he said 2:03-2:04. If she had gone out in 61-62, that is probably what she would have run. But if the intervals get longer, the rests shorter, and she's better rested from such a mammoth effort, maybe those low 2s will come in a few months.
Congrats to Willis and her mother! 2:05 as a freshman is a fine time.
She is the poster story for hitting puberty...But I think other stuff was going on....Went to like 3 different high schools and ended up at ICF for like a half a year.
Willis attends the same high school that Favor and Solinsky went to.
The young lady who came in third (Bailey Goggans) isn't getting much attention from this race, but she was closing fast and is someone to keep an eye on. She is a sophomore from Marble Falls, Texas (home of Leonel Manzano) who has run 55, 2:06 (2:09 before Sunday) and 5:01.
Mom was an Olympian in the 5k for Ireland and Dad was a low 3:40 1500m runner in the US, he did not take up running till after college. Some good genetics for sure.
Roisin looked shocked at the finish--like she couldn't believe herself what had just happened!
Last year she won the Junior High mile @ NBNI:
Event 310 Girls 1 Mile Run Junior HS
1 # 2797 Willis, Roisin 8 Stevens Point, WI 5:05.51 2
4:44.919 (4:44.919)
2 # 2193 Ping, Lauren 7 Winona, MN 5:10.27 2
4:51.703 (4:51.703)
3 # 3100 Vendetti, Jamisen 8 Glenville, NY 5:10.74 2
4:51.325 (4:51.325)
600 record holder and 400 PR of 52. I think she should focus on the 400. Guessing she could hit 50.5 at US championships.
Something that may not be obvious to anyone who hasn't seen Roisin in person is that she is quite tall. Mu is 5'10" I believe, but I'm pretty sure Roisin is taller than that.
For evidence of Roisin's height, look at the photo in this article of her and Mu standing side by side:
Just in can you actually wanted to watch it:

Thing went out waaaaay too fast. Had nothing left, but Roisin paced it nicely and gave it her all. Looks like Athing just need to learn better pacing.

I have a PR of 1:54 but only 53 in the 400. I used to even split 57-57. She has a PR of 52 but died after going out in 59.

We were ready 3 weeks ago to give Mu the US championship this summer and now she is back to just being a good high school runner. Girls are funny.
How old is she? Wondering if she has gone through puberty and the associated changes to female athletes' bodies.
Yeah, she seems like an early developer. Just hope she keeps improving.

Thanks for posting the video. Quite a few upcoming stars.
She turns 17 in June so she is on the young side for a junior. Her brothers are decent runners which makes me think that she will be good but who knows if great.

How did you do that? What kind of training did you do for 800?

Here is that Junior High mile with Roisin winning from last year:
https://www.nbnationalsin.com/eprofile.php?event_id=1164&do=videos&video_id=237306Also of note: then 7th-grader Lauren Ping finished less than 5 seconds behind her, for 2nd place. I was hoping to see Lauren back at NBNI this year in the Junior High mile (open to 7th & 8th graders), expecting her to win it this time around (with Roisin now a Freshman). Lauren's definitely faster now than she was a year ago.
Grace peaked around this age. There is no guarantee that Lauren is faster than last year.
Ran mile in 4:10 at that time. Training was focused on the mile.
