I ran Tokyo as well. I’m a hobby jogger but having to stand in the cold and rain for 2 hours before the start didn’t help. The wind was demoralizing. I did get to see the lead runners during the race and they looked fast and at ease.
I was miserable enough that I wanted to quit but didn’t know if I could find a subway stop. I ran a PB for the half at the half by 5 mins and made the mistake to stop and take a leak. Every bathroom was a 15 min wait and stopping and standing then having to resume running led to my second half of the race being just a mess.
As for Matt, he’s a great runner and he finished. Sometimes you just have to take this as a crap day and move on.
