I’ve searched high and low. Sifted through too much puesdoscience and met with 3 doctors. The closest thing I can associate with my symptoms is overtraining. It certainly makes sense given that I ran in excess of 6000 miles last year.
This all started about a year ago when I would gain a noticeable amount of weight. It started off at 6-8 pounds and would go away fairly quickly. Then come August I blew up 10 lbs and it took a little longer to come off. During the flare in August, my easy pace fell off from 7’ to about 7:45 and I certainly felt gassed. But I came around in a couple of weeks. Fast forwarding a couple of months, I set a huge PR running sub-2:20. (To give you an idea of my swings in performance, I ran a 17:30 downhill 5k a couple months prior and I also never ran under 5min or 2:25 for an 800 in any workout and not for lack of trying.)
Jumping ahead two weeks from that I gained 15 pounds and felt so tired I had to take a day off and back down after that. That subsided fairly quickly and by the new year I was nearly at full capacity. That didn’t last as by middle of January I blew up again. At this point fatigue was a major issue. I called off of work and just slept until 4. Did that twice.
This time it hasn’t gone away and now I’m up in excess of 20lbs from my baseline of 150 (5’11”). At this point I have stopped running and when I try it’s a struggle to run 8 minute pace. I’ve been tested for anemia and thyroid issues. The only abnormal finding is low testosterone (which the doctor pulled at 4PM). This isn’t super shocking to me as I’ve never been terribly interested in pursing women (which is depressing, as I am WAY behind the curve). The other notable symptoms are sleep maintenance insomnia and maybe some kidney issues as last year I went on oxybutenin as I was having terrible urges to pee. Not on that anymore.
I don’t know if this fits overtraining as it was a coming and going problem. I’m getting desperate and it has become impossible to run fast and hit any of the goals I have.
