Bizarre weight gain and high mileage

I am referring to the marathon. I don’t want to be more specific as then it gets to the point where I’m identifiable.

that amount of weight swing is huge. that's water weight if over a couple weeks. don't think you're gaining 15lb of fat in 2 weeks. have you had electrolytes checked, like K+? especially since you mentioned meds for having to pee...drinking to much? binge eating?

yes, overtraining and insomnia can lead to weight gain, even if still putting in the mileage.

if you gain weight you eat too much, i don't think it's only water retention.

But for other symptoms maybe lack of vitamin D or/and B12?

I have a pretty good sense of how much food I need to eat. I’ve weighed essentially the same since I was 14. At this point I think 5lbs is certainly possible as my appetite has not fully subsided from 130 mile weeks, but not 20lbs. In the past when this has happened the weight drops off in less than a week with no change in diet.

I think I’m alright on B12 as I eat meat and but I did start supplementing vitamin D.

My electrolytes were in range. I haven’t slept through a night in ages. I thought drinking alcohol might be a trigger for all these symptoms but I’m no longer convinced. I stopped taking the peeing drug about 9 months ago. I still have the problem but it’s not as bad as before.

I also get really thirsty. I definitely don’t underconsume liquids either. I’ll wake up at night needing to chug water.

With Thyroid levels, B12 there is always a significant range. Yourself male and long distance runner you would want to be at the optimal level.

I'll have to revisit this with specific suggestions but you could benefit from full mineral supp you could definitely still be deficient in B12, folate despite being carnivore. B12, folate are needed for the Iron to work/Hematocrit. **When I took B Vits, (no iron supplements) folate my Ferritin, hemoglobin all went up Compared to hardly moving when I was on Iron. I was though having 2-3 organ meats/spinach Kale/Vit C

Again I'll get back w/specific suggestions

Hey thanks for the response. No blood counts were out of range. Im not discounting folate or b12.

And it’s not consistent. I’m NOT referring to an 800. I ran under 2:20 for the marathon and I ran a 17:30 5k a couple months earlier. I have huge performance swings. Unfortunately I cannot edit my initial posts as looking at it does make you think it’s an 800.

is 95.5F often what you are at for body temp? some people run cooler, others hotter than the avg of 98.6. sometimes one can run cold with a bacterial infection (that would not be EBV btw).

drinking too much water, w/o electrolytes, will actually make you even more thirsty - so perhaps your night time thirst.

the fatigue mixed in with such rapid large weight fluctuation...do you have any pain in GI system?

Low testosterone, weight gain, insomnia and super high mileage suggests that you might have jacked up endocrine system. Does the weight gain is all fat? It might be a low level inflammation which manifests as water retention as well. Also stress (cortisol) might drive fat accumulation as a result of inflammation that is caused by constant muscle damage.

I would suggest you to supplement high quality antioxidants (resveratrol, boswellia and alpha lipoic acid). Vitamins might be of benefit. And cut the mileage.

There is a good chance you have been overtraining and underfueling for a long time, so your body is "jacked up." It happened to me as well following several years of disordered eating and overtraining. Same sluggishness, weight gain despite high training, insomnia, stress and so on. You should not weigh the same as you did at 14.

I should add that once I finally did acknowledge what was wrong, I took steps to get healthy and my weight has stabilized to within 5-10 lbs of my "race weight" while I was struggling. I will take a few extra lbs over poor health and injuries any day.

I really doubt I’ve been underfueling. I eat a ton and was not rail-thin. And it doesn’t seem like a lot of fat. My abs have only lost a little definition even after throwing on 20lbs. The difference now is I can hardly bend over as my “gut” feels full.

Right. Underfueling isn't just about the number of calories you consume, but the composition as well. I think it would be very difficult to run 6000 miles a year without a professional nutritionist.

Also, I was never rail thin either, which is why it took so long to figure out what was going on. Also not saying you have an eating disorder or anything, but was just speaking from the cause of my own experience.

no, you dont need a dietician for 6000mpy, thats ~125mpw. doable.

op, i asked about GI discomfort, you mentioned feeling full bending down.

perhaps you have celiac disease or chron's?

that really rapid weight swing cant be fat, it just doest work that way. you'd need ~52,500 excess calories to gain 15lb in 2 weeks. and no way are you losing that in just a week or month like you have been. its mostly water.

i wont argue that endocrine system and cortisol levels are a bit off as well
