Nah, it's more amazing how many people walk on the track in lane one when it's nice outside and there are plenty of other options available.

I realize its none of my business, but the thing that bothers me is when people walk on the treadmill, and crank up the incline, but then hang on to the handlebars the whole time. Its equivalent to walking up a hill while holding on to a rope towing you up.
I was at the gym today. Fat chicks and middle-aged women were walking slowly on the treadmill at 1 mph.
I hopped on a treadmill next to them, cranked it up to 10 mph, and ran effortless on it as they stared at me in amazement like I'm a god or something.
Best way to impress chicks at the gym imo. Muscular guys bench pressing weights are a dime a dozen, but fast runners on the treadmill going at 10+ mph are not that common.
Not many walkers at my gym (people walk more outdoors in Europe), and the threadmill walkers are young girls that throw in a little jog inbetween, but today I was really amazed about this fat woman, she ran 6 miles/h about, and her feet was going like drumsticks, very encouraging.

I would estimate 50% of people using the gym treadmills only walk (sometimes at a pace so slow they can browse the web on their phones) and another 40% do some kind of walk-jog combo. It's simply amazing
I know this is old news, but it's amazing the more you think about it
Why is this amazing to you?

I look at the treadmills between lifts.
I am totally going to put this quote on a t-shirt and wear it to the gym. I can't stop saying it to myself and it is awesome. "Do you ever run on a treadmill?"
"I look at the treadmills between lifts."

This! I've seen this too and wondered if it was a common practice.

Because it's an utter waste of time (for them and for me if I'm waiting to use a treadmill) and yet it's a popular course of action.
this story isn't actually that interesting wrote:
A girl in my dorm freshman year complained a few times that she couldn't work out because she didn't have a ride to the gym. I'm not big on working out at the gym, but I wanted to be a nice guy, so offered to work out with her just so that she could ride over with me.
So I drove her to the gym, and she proceeded to walk on the treadmill for 15 minutes and then tell me she was ready to leave. I was like "wait, you needed a ride to the gym so you could go for a walk? Couldn't that problem kind of solve itself?" She didn't understand the point I was trying to make. We didn't work out together again.

You rushed this one. Your witty retort at the end was a big giveaway.
The only true part is that you’re not big on working out. Twink.

That's it. They were staring at you because you're a god and not because you're a weirdo who seems to be watching everyone else. Congratulations on impressing fat chicks and middle-aged women.
I don’t see a problem with walking...
It’s a nice warm up and at the end of the day it’s more practical than running. Maybe not for weight loss but not everyone wants to wreck themselves all the time.
I live in an area with a lot of Asians and they’re always walking. They look a lot fitter than the rest of the people I live around. Maybe there is something to it...

Quite judgmental you are.
Why should you care that these people are walking?
They all just want exercise.
Maybe they are afraid of dogs.
Maybe they are afraid of getting hit by a car.
Maybe they have lupus.
Maybe they have fibromyalgia.
Maybe they are recovering from any kind of surgery.
Maybe they have arthritis.
Maybe they are just living their lives the way they want to and don't need some douche bag judging their level of exercise.

Two counterpoints to this:
1. If you're going to walk and the weather isn't bad, you might as well go outside, or even the hallways. (Yes, I live in a completely safe area.)
2. Walking 0.5 miles at 2 mph while browsing facebook on your phone is not a workout. It's not even a warm-up. It's an utter waste of time. Something higher intensity would be a much better use of time - if you can't handle the impact of running, the spin bike or elliptical would be a better option. Get your heart rate up for 20 minutes or even do a short interval session.
You're right that it's a stereotypical Asian thing to do, but the people who do this do not, in general, look fit.

There's nothing wrong with being judgmental.
I care because:
1. Sometimes they occupy all the treadmills
2. I care about other people, and don't want to see them wasting time on an ineffective "workout" due to ignorance. Do you only care about things that affect you, personally? That seems like a selfish way to live.
First of all, you can only have "first of all." "Third of all" negates your first of all. Second, be happy you can run. Third, let people walk if they like to walk, dummy.

First of all, don't put spaces before commas. Secondly put a question mark (?) after your questions. Third of all, I look at the treadmills between lifts and when I am waiting for one to open up if I'm waiting to run on one.

Well aren't you the pot calling the kettle black. You could just as easily run elsewhere as they could walk elsewhere. At least running you keep yourself pretty warm outside. Those walkers would freeze. Give'm the treadmills you p&ssy!

That's not actually true. First of all, there are a lot more walk-friendly routes and times of day than running-friendly. Secondly, I have more reason to be running than they do walking because at least I am getting some fitness benefit from it.
Not many people run period. And i find treadmill running hard mentally and physically. It seems like alot of walkers want to run but its hard to be able to just nail out a few miles uf you havent been running on any sort of consistent basis. What I see is that when I jump on a treadmill next to someone walking they almost soon enough start to run and then give up after a little bit.

That's also true and a problem. If people can't run they should learn to run/walk with evenly spaced walk breaks and work up to being able to run slowly. Instead people run way too hard for 5 minutes until their exhausted and walk for another 5-10 minutes and then step off.
At least I would consider this exercise, though, compared to walking at a pace so slow that you can focus 100% of your attention on your phone (which is yet another problem)
