Sales is misunderstood. Good sales positions are not the same as the pushy sales kind. Say you own a company and you need fuel. You call fuel companies and you are quoted by a salesperson. Good sales people give exceptional value and without them the economy would be nothing.
Well, my perception of sales is forever changed. You're telling me that I can simply call them on the phone, and they will tell me how much their product costs!? What brilliant, magnificent creatures these sales people are!
A lot of people are saying sales in this thread - "sales" is a very broad career covering everything from selling shoes to selling cars to complex database systems to F500 companies and IT security systems to the gov't. Those jobs are not exactly created equal.
Salespeople often have to be "relatable" which might lead an outsider to believe they're not as intelligent as perhaps an introverted back-office coder or an asthmatic lawyer. I would say it depends on sales job. And great sales people make 300k+ without having to go to grad or professional school. Who's the real dummy?

Sure it's been said somewhere in the thread, but sales. Car sales is a great place to start.
Not any more.
Auto sales is probably the last job in the US where you can walk in off the street with no skills, training or higher education and make a solid middle class salary with the opportunity to move up into management and make mix six to seven figures. A top car salesman at a major metro franchised dealer can make over $200k every year. Very good ones will make $100-120k. But the rest of the industry can be very Glengarry Glen Ross. People who are not producing get fired pretty quickly. GMs and General Sales Managers move around a lot more than they did 20-30 years ago. And they like to bring their favorite sales people with them. So, even if you are doing well, you can find yourself on the street if management changes. And then there is the steady creep of technology. Carvana and other platforms are selling vehicles without commissioned sales staff. And big dealer groups are trying to cut costs by doing deals online and having ipads in stores that customers can use instead of sitting in an office with a salesman.
Otherwise, if you are not a people person, the next best paycheck is in the oilfield or refineries. It is grueling and dangerous work, but oilfield workers can easily make $70-80k doing manual labor. Spend some time learning pipefitting or welding, and you can get $100k+.
First, recognize that the key is to outwork the smart people. Whatever field, outwork them, do it better, quicker, do it now. Those fields could be home Reno, plumbing, electrical, etc. learn it, then go out on your own. People will pay an honest guy, who will do it right and right now. Those not appealing to you? Go into finance, same rules apply.

This is standard middle class people advice. A wealthy person would tell you to leverage other people's time and money for your own gain. Hope that helps.

Not a lot of money here, but running a "sports" blog is pretty chill. Let the other two "employees" do the groundwork and you basically copy/paste links to other articles and occasionally weigh in on meaningless message board convos. Skills as a self promoter/own hype man are helpful.
No. A salesperson's function, I'm talking the good kind, is to make the customer better in some way at a value price. For example, using my example, your company needs fuel. You call several in the region. A good salesperson will carefully evaluate your needs and quote you a fair price. It's not about pressure tactics, or lying, at all. It's simply about getting the product you need at a great value.
Actually, the billionaire way to do it is to be as simple as possible and get it done in a way that goes against the norm. For example, instead of having a company with a zillion employees outsources as many functions as possible.. Your "conglomerate" is then run but three people. I know this principle to be true.

What are some jobs that a guy of average intelligence can make a lot of money?
I went to college and I'm not an idiot, but I'm not smart enough to work at Google or be a doctor. I am in IT and make $75K. I would like to make $200K. I have a friend who isn't that smart and he made a ton in real estate. What are some other ways to do it?
A lot of professional athletes are pretty dumb, surprised nobody brought that up yet

Become a plumber or an electrician. Those jobs aren't getting outsourced to another country.
they pay is pretty crappy though. Google for the average pay. They might be billong you 100/hr. there pay is a fraction of that. Running a plumbing company on the otherhand.....
There are some subsets of the trades with crazy pay. Underwater welders for example. There is also a reason why those subsets tend to pay well

How old are you and how long have you been working in IT?
I thought good workers in IT got paid a lot more.
That's a fallacy. Even Engineers don't make much more. 200k is silicon valley the exception. Good Engineers outside high cost areas are making 100k-130k. With health care costing $1200/month for a family these days, you're a wage slave.
If you're smart, medicine is way more lucrative and stable. 200k+ easy, paid health care, regular pay raises, etc...
What about buy or start a car dealership or funeral home? Neither requires smarts.
Obama care has decimated health care. I know doctors who had a 20 year anesthesiology business that got squeezed out due to hospital consolidations and insurance rip-offs. Plus if you aren't very smart then I don't think you'll become a doctor.
Realtor is even worse. I know several people that got their license and then were out of the business within 3 years. With the internet there is very little need for realtors. That business should have vanished 10 years ago.
If you're in IT you're smart enough to go to work at the US patent office. After a couple years they let you work from home. Good benefits and you can't get fired unless you go to jail.

Obama Care actually improved my income greatly once it took effect due to more patients being insured. Now I get to read more radiology studies and get paid way more than I did 7 years ago. Yes I work a lot more too, but that's been true of medicine for decades. The workload only increases...
