You don't know if Trump "thought it was real at the time" as all he did was respond to the reports in the way you suggest he should:
“That I can tell you is horrible. I’ve seen it … last night. It doesn’t get worse, as far as I’m concerned.”
I suspect he didn't believe it, but if he'd responded in any other way the SJW's, looney lefties, AOC, media, Pelosi, you, etc would have tried to crucify him.
