Because our marathoners from Frank Shorter to Galen Rupp haven't been capable of running both a good 10K and a good marathon. Oh wait, maybe that's a stupid theory with no empirical support.

Does he now? How about all of the sub-2:10 Japanese? Jack of all trades, master of none is a built-in excuse.
Also: no Galen Rupp equivalent in this field, male or female. Analogy fail.

Most of our sub 2:10 marathon runners of the last decade have had a “split focus” and ran track races.
Might by why we have so few, especially so few sub-2:08.

Exactly, American men run timid. They fear the distance. They need to embrace a kamikaze spirit. Go balls to the walls. Attack the marathon(instead of bashing Stinson for crashing in the latter stages of the marathon, we should congratulate him for going out so hard and testing himself as opposed to taking it safe). US men need to start focusing on the 30 kilometer point of the marathon. Most of the elite Japanese men go through 30 k point in about 90 minutes(partly due to them training in kilometers and having 3 minute kilometers being the focus as opposed to US men having 5 minute miles being the focus). While the elite US men hit it around 92-93 minutes. This also starts young. Most US kids are lazy and there parents are soft. They don't push there kids hard enough. US kids under train, are afraid to train hard and put in the mileage. A few things America needs to do: introduce ekidens(road relays), and road races( about 10-20 kilometers in length) to the collegiate and high school programs programs.

What was the point of this? Wouldn't everyone have been better off running road races for prize money? Did anyone hit a standard that they wouldn't have anyway at the first Stanford meet or even Mt. SAC?
They can hit the USA standard now and run a marathon in April while the college track season is opening up.
Tell us, Mr. Insider, how many of those in this field are running spring marathons?

So getting back to the "are they elite" argument for a moment.
All the men with finishing times ran roughly within 10% of the WR
All the women, up to Alexi, also ran within 10% of the WR (Alexi was about 89%)
That's elite. Congrats to everyone!
You're trying way too hard here.

They do, as speed work for the marathon. For example, Toshihiko Seko ran his 5000m and marathon personal best in the same year(5000m PB in July of 86 and his marathon PB in October of 86). Also, Toshihiko Seko made his marathon debut in 1978. Shows how important it is to keep working on your speed.

Thank you. You just unearthed where I erred. I meant though failed to state that I meant racing at the annual national track championships, not simply racing on the track, period. I'm prepared to be proven wrong again, yet I'd be surprised if any of the men qualified for the MGC Race also race at the track national championships.

That doesn’t make any sense. If our best are doing track work occasionally during the year while our sea of 2 teens guys primarily focus on halves and fulls then why do you think it supports doing the latter?

That was when he broke 4. So no, it was not disqualified.
