I’m a degree qualified engineer based in the north of Britain. Mid forties. I can’t make more than £55000 salary per annum no matter where I apply. It seems this is the ceiling as friends are stuck at this level too. I don’t want to go into management but have team leader responsibilities. I do get six weeks paid holiday per year.
After income tax and national insurance tax, I take home around £37000 per year (plus minimal benefits that don’t add up to much such as reduced gym membership off site but not private health care). It’s not a great standard of living as it’s expensive living here, other taxes (council tax, road tax, tax on fuel, vat, housing) and costs are high (commuting costs, heating costs, electricity). Can’t cycle to work as I’d like to - it’s too dangerous - my taxes don’t provide pavements, much less cycle paths for much of the route. When I hurt my back, the NHS refused me an MRI scan and I had to pay for one out of my savings. I have to wait 2/3 weeks to see a GP if I’m sick. I don’t want to move to London.
How do salaries and costs compare in the US and what other countries would people suggest moving to for a more rewarding working balance?
