Wow, quite a read on his wikipedia page. Amazing how somebody can be so clearly a terrible person with such little consequence.
Well, there is this guy...who wasn't a former runner, but rather a current D-1 runner at Virginia Tech (thread is on these boards if you search). I'd say it's pretty serious.
Paan Singh Tomar
"He served in the Indian Army, where his talent for running was discovered. He was a seven-time national steeplechase champion in the 1950s and 1960s, and represented India at the 1958 Asian Games. After a premature retirement from the army, Tomar returned to his native village. He later gained notoriety as a Chambal Valley dacoit when he resorted to banditry after a land feud there. In late 1981, Tomar lost his life in a shootout with hundreds of armed members of a police task force sent to capture him."
Tim Danielson, the second high schooler to break 4 minutes in the mile, (1967) was recently convicted of second degree murder for killing his ex-wife and sentenced to 20 years to life.
Oscar Ponce - dude went way down, all the way down to Mexico
Steve Ortiz, number 2 UCLA distance runner of all time behind Meb, molested kids as a coach, was arrested and imprisoned. There are threads here on LR.
Former 1500 WR holder Sydney Maree spent almost two years in a South African prison for transferring money from a government agency into his personal bank account. (Although it sounds like it may have been a case of Third World "justice.")
Woah, these are some pretty epic crimes.
a former Austrian marathon champion became a running bank robber...
David Mack pulled off a $700k bank heist and allegedly popped the Notorious B.I.G. in the same year. All of that after marrying Florence Griffith Joyner and repping the Santa Monica Track Club! Epic!!
The movie based on the novel based on this guy was decent.
Eric Kweder killed his roommate blunt force trauma.
James Hogue - nothing too serious, but he's a pretty famous con man...
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
Des Linden: "The entire sport" has changed since she first started running Boston.
Matt Choi was drinking beer halfway through the Boston Marathon
