BMI of 20.5.
Put it perspective, the BMI of a few of the top runners:
Haile Gebrselassie: 20.4
Kenenisa Bekele: 22
Nick Willis: 20.3
Joseph Ebuya: 23.4
Don't know where you got these from, but a quick research gives
Geb 20.0
Bekele 19.5
Ebuya 19.6
There was a study about the 100 top marathoners with an average of 19.5, too.
So your 20.5 might be far from being fat, but in comparison to elite runners you are maybe 7 lbs too heavy.
According to his IAAF profile, it has Ebuya height and weight at 5'6 and 145 ibs.
https://www.iaaf.org/athletes/kenya/joseph-ebuya-210293And Bekele height is exaggerated on most sources, he is actually around 5'3 and according to the article down below, his racing weight is 123 ibs.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/16/sports/two-hour-marathon-kenenisa-bekele.htmlWell, it definitely does not sound like you are fat and 3 weeks before a race is no time to crash diet, if you want to have a decent race. (Although, from what you described, it doesn't sound like your coach called you fat either. )
It may be good to talk to your coach. If you do want to lose a couple pounds, I would only lose 1-2 lbs each of the next 2 weeks and then make sure you eat normally that last week before your race, so you have energy stores. You don't want to be short on calories or dehydrated going into your race.
Has your weight changed recently to prompt such a comment? Or, what race weight do you feel most comfortable and perform the best?
Do you run for St Thomas in MN?

You're the same exact height and weight as Herb Elliott.

BMI is just a guide. NFL running backs have no body fat but calculate as obese. We need to see the OP or know his body fat %. His coach probably knows best.
Go run a massive PR
You're def a troll, that weight and height could be considered underweight.
My high school coach, however, was big on weight and would call me fat all the time and tell me to lose weight. He was right, to a point, and I dropped twenty pounds going into my junior year and hit the podium at states every meet after.
However, once I got down, I still felt the pressure to lose weight and would often fast and even messed around with diet pills. I got to the point that one time I slept walked and woke up and I was eating cereal (body didn't like running, lifting and not eating). I didn't know it at the time but I was hurting myself by also not being properly fueled for my runs. I almost passed out after trying to do a hill workout on 342 calories for the day.
When I got to college I started eating what I wanted and running more to keep down the weight, worked out best.
My high school coach was a great coach and pushed me to heights I would have never reached before. However, years later I met our mile record holder at my HS and he had ballooned up to 300lbs and told me he was also under a lot of pressure in high school to lose weight under the coach. That coach's ex wife also came to my college to talk about eating disorders, she was once a pro runner, wonder we she got it from??? I don't have any regrets or ill will towards my former coach, great guy, I just don't think you could get away today with calling people fat in this PC world.
Sounds like the coach has a wide array of skills.
However, are you heavy or fat?
Arnold Swarzenegger wasn't fat.
Spanky was fat. But nowhere near as big as Arnold.
But if you go tits up over this you are just a jogger anyway, so start drinking more beer and eating more soft shell tacos.

Actually, yes he was. Excess muscle mass, plus all the fat around it, always turns to more fat.

Hi sorry, I'm a 21 year old guy in College, distance runner - skinny legs tbh - running the 5k in 3 weeks
Well if you have skinny legs then 147 at that height is a few lbs over optimal...and apparently your coach giving you advice made you come cry to LR?

Hey everyone,
so yesterday my coach told me that I need to watch what i'm eating and that I look a few pounds over race weight. I'm currently 5'11 ft, 147lbs - which I thought was okay tbh.
At this point I might just quit after being shredded that hard - what should I do?
Lose weight.

Tell him/her that his/her husband/wife had no complaints last night
I'm a collegiate runner who's 6ft 137 and I am very skinny - that being said there are a number of different body types on my team so certainly there is no secret formula.
I'd say you should take your coach's advice and be shooting for 143 range - trust me it makes a difference
Don’t lose weight. Just run fast, his comment on your weight is just another log to add to the fire of pure hate next time you race.
I am 5'10" and I weigh in at 185 pounds and I kick all forms of ass! So put that in your pipe and smoke it homey!!!

This is stupid, if you’re training hard, you’ll not be overweight. Not everyone is “cut” genetically
Two guys on the same team, doing the same training will not be the same weight. One may eat very well and get adequate sleep while the other eats junk food and drinks too much and stays up too late. The unhealthier one may weigh 10 pounds more than his teammate and may receive a comment from the coach to lose weight. He then comes here and many people give him bad advice.
Without knowing your body type, I'd say that you could, as a runner, stand to lose a few pounds in getting in better shape and eating healthier if you really want to maximize your performance. At 5'11" I go from mid 130s in my best shape up to 154 when I haven't run for weeks, and there is a fair correlation between best times and lightest weight, namely, that I may run fine in the low 140s but tend to run faster in the mid to high 130s. The difference isn't that big a deal, though. I wouldn't stress but just work a bit harder and cut down on added sugars.
