So obviously she's a beast at 1500/5000 and just showed great range by dominating the USATF XC. What's ultimately going to be her best distance and what's she going to run at the next couple Olympic Games?

5000/10,000
maybe 1500/5000 then 5/10?
I'm glad I'm so slow that I never have to make that decision!
1500 if she makes the team. Worried that she's at such a high level right now she'll either be injured or serving a drug suspension by 2020.
None...she'll be banned by 2020 and retired by 2024
The only way she gets banned is for being too fast. Her group is the cleanest of clean. She will have every American that she goes after maybe from 800 to marathon. She is the poster child for developing with low mileage through high school.

No. She will not have the 800 record. Nor the marathon. Even the 10,000 is far-fetched.
Her best distances are 1500-5000. She’s good at surrounding distances.
Too soon to tell.
Doha will allow for 800/1500 double.
She ought to be the face for this

PED suspension
What is shows is how important good mechanics are. She has them. Some can be learned and improved upon, but you can only gain so much. Most American elites have horrible mechanics and it limits them on the international level. Houlihan won't have this issue. Now that she has developed her engine to this point, combined with her natural foot speed and great mechanics, the sky is really the limit. Also, it appears we finally have someone with the mindset that she is a great distance runners, not a 1500 or 5000 runner. Think you will ever see Simpson in a 10,000? Not going to happen. Nor will it with most "milers". They are just too much inside their own head about what they can do.
Anyhow, Houlihan has the engine, the speed, and the mechanics to compete with ANYONE on the world level know and it's going to be one hellva show to watch for the next 4-5 years if she stays healthy!
1500. That is by far her best event globally.

The sudden improvement last year was eye opening

At least 4 of the 19 fastest American women at 5,000 were born in Iowa. Clearly Shelby’s advantage is genetic.

She should have waited until she was 27 before doing pushups and ignoring doorbells.

Her best distance was 800m back in the day, and she’s moved up as she’s added mileage and come closer to maxing-out her speed. Her PR’s 2:01, but I think she could’ve run 1:58-high last year. She’s always had solid endurance, beating Emma Bates to win West regional XC in college for example. She’s short and light and biomechanically sound, has improved consistently for her entire life, and just beat Molly Huddle over 10k XC, so I would not rule out her moving successfully to longer distances.
I think she’ll run the 5,000 in Tokyo, and maybe the 1500 too. If healthy and all, 5,000 in 2024 and maybe the 10k too.
Lifetime bests of
1:59.5
3:56.6
8:25.5 (AR)
14:31.0 (AR)
30:25
67:10 (AR)
2:22:04
The only disagreement I have is that her best event in high school was the 1500. She just didn’t like distance. She holds the state record of 4:26.
She will run the 3000 , 5000 too far .
No one has ever moved up successfully to 10000M after starting as a 1500M runner let alone an 800M runner. Shelby is very talented but the 1500m will be her best event forever. 14:34 will get you an AR but you need a sub 14:20 to medal in this day and age.

Siffan Hissan...originally 800/1500, moved up to 5000m and had a super impressive half debut with the European record
