The building in question is called the CU Indoor Practice Facility. i.e. it was built for and controlled by football and the track just happens to be in there. So, it would be more accurate to say Mel Tucker (new CU coach) is charging $22k.... thought I bet the price/policy was set before he arrived.
This is absolutely correct. This facility is an indoor football practice facility, built to replace the inflatable practice facility the CU football team used to use. The fact that there’s a track in it and the track team is allowed to practice in there is out of the kindness of the athletic department’s heart and a nod to Wetmore’s success. There is no reason for them to give access to anyone else, it sucks but that’s the reality. Over time maybe they’ll be less protective of it and lower the price for the community to rent, but that’s all we can hope for.
The Air Force Academy hosts 4 USATF all-comers meets every year plus a two day high school invitational (last weekend) and Colorado School of Mines hosts 6 high school meets from December to February and a number of open track nights. Western State also hosts a high school invite and I think CU Colorado Springs hosted at least one AAU meet this year. Having said that the greater Denver/Boulder area could really use a track facility like the Amory, it would be a huge boost to youth track in Colorado. I’ve heard many people talk about it, I’ve even heard rumors that Jeremy Dodson (former all American sprinter from CU) had sponsors lined up and was ready to break ground on such a facility but they are just rumors.
