Not true. Basketball players go broke a year or two after leaving the sport because their spending habits are horrid. That fact doesn't take away their pro status. It just shows they are stupid. Anyone who makes money or gets a prize with monetary value is a professional athlete.
Doesn't apply. Different sports, completely different scenarios. NBAers and true pro sports athletes don't pay for gear to train for and compete in their sport, don't pay for travel to compete, never pay to enter a competition. Going broke after leaving the sport has to do with spending on anything else.
