Why would anyone want to run an ultramarathon?
To get a ribbon or a medal. Once there are few enough competitors, even middle of the road athletes become champions. To be honest, why would anyone want to run more than 10K? It's where the colleges stop, and that is where there are the greatest number of people that can offer up a significant amount of time for training as they are yet to experience meaningful responsibilities in their lives.
Fresh air, nature, scenery, quiet, challenging, adventurous, unpredictable, competitive, spiritual, great people, the list goes on.
But...if you prefer, you can stick to the road, pound your bones into the pavement, sucking diesel fumes while chasing a clock you’re never going to catch. Or maybe you are just doing it so you can tell your grandkids you ran Boston and at that point they will head to the pantry, reach in and grab you a cookie, which you most certainly deserve for enduring such a mind-numbing endeavor.
In nature you’ll come across other species that will crush any possible world record marathon human time. It would be a humbling experience for many and I would recommend giving it a try.
