"Tracktown" was so-so. (I've actually watched it unlike many LRC critics). It is low budget indie fare with all of the quirks and shortcomings expected of such films.
I will posit that many men on this site hate it because it was made by a young woman and features a young woman as the protagonist. It's no secret that misogyny runs rampant here. God forbid that someone makes a movie about running that doesn't follow the tired theme of underdog male wins glory through pluck, hard work, and the guidance of a wise guru. In fact, had she made such a movie ( fictionalized female Pre that doesn't die rather, wins Olympic gold), it would get slammed for being maudlin and many angry boys would quickly point out that winning gold is easier for women because the talent pool isn't as deep or other lame thinking to diminish a woman positive story. I also feel that her character hits a bit too close to home some folks. A great number of serious runners, both male and female, are Type A neurotic control freaks filled with self-doubt and driven by slavish superstitions and a deep need for validation.
Pappas incurs a lot of hate here since she is living the dream. Yes, she exploited some loopholes to get there and that just frosts a large number of also rans who don't have athletic talent nor recent immigrant parents and grandparents in their lineage. Good on her for doing what she loves and not just settling for life in a cubical farm and a collection of finisher medals.
