I run pretty frequently in a town with dirt trails that run parallel to the road. Today, I was running on the trail and spotted a man on a horse 50 yards or so up the trail. It was heading in the same direction, with its back turned to me.
I did what I always do in this situation: I switched over from the trail to the road, gave the horse (what I thought was) a wide berth, and ran by. The horse had absolutely no reaction to my presence. But as soon as I passed, the guy lost his sh-t and started yelling at me, and telling me to "halt." I was in the middle of a tempo, so I just kept running and didn't hear what he was saying.
Was I in the wrong here? And if so, what is the proper etiquette when passing a horse?
