In my state it is illegal for the landlord to enter without your approval unless they provide prior notice. I think most states have similar laws so landlords can't access your home whenever they want to protect your privacy. Unless you were stupid and signed a bad agreement you should be able to tell them to stop coming in and that they need to give you appropriate advanced notice you agree to. Defend your rules.
State laws vary wildly. Still, I doubt any of them allow the landlord to enter without prior notice unless it’s an emergency or the tenant is in breach of the lease agreement. It doesn’t matter if OP had inadvertently signed a lease giving the landlord unfettered access to his quarters because state laws trump a lease agreement. In other words, a renter cannot sign his rights away.
I realize it’s a delicate situation because you like the place and the rent is a good deal. Any way you could approach the husband? You could ask whether there were problems with the house (heating/ac/ants/whatever) because you’ve noticed that someone had been coming through on a regular basis and you’re wondering whether it was something you needed to be aware of.
When I was in college, I had something similar happen. Two-story house with separate entrances, we were renting one floor. The landlord, a couple, lived in the neighborhood. We’d run into them at the store, and the wife would comment on our new rug or some such she should’ve had no knowledge of. My boyfriend finally set up threads over our front door (I know...) and we knew someone was coming in in our absence. She was a busybody so we approached the husband about it instead. I got the cold shoulder from her afterwards, but we kept the place and the odd visits stopped.
