My mail is still delivered. I can still take an emergency crap at any homeless shelter, known also as public libraries.
This shutdown validated the amount of unnecessary federal workers. Pay the TSA folks but get rid of all the others.

I don't know anyone who is financially struggling yet, but it's hard for other reasons - it's not a vacation - more like jury duty, where you have to check each day to see if you have to come in.
oh the horror! When do private sector employees get to whine about overscheduling?
Fed workers get plenty of pay, great benefits and are nearly impossible to fire. They know these things can happen and have plenty of means to prepare.

What about those reliant on government assistance to fill the gap? Subsidized housing, WIC, EBT, etc.,,,at some point those funds run out.
It’s more than just workers missing pay and as this goes past 21 days real effects spread across the country like a virus.

I've used the opportunity to galavinize movement for Washington to secede from the union.
Me and some cohorts have even been actively seeking out ex federal employees and exhiling them into the vast wilderness,
we've seized their possessions and auctioned them off, the removal of their superfluous positions has freed up large sums of capital for public projects that the state can organize.
We've reduced the police and military presence to a level that people and the world can tolerate.
We've issued a mandate providing financial incentives for business to innovate green energy tech.
We've outlawed network news and social media

I am waiting for final grant paperwork following an approval that was done before the shutdown. I have five people ... yes, good taxpaying Americans waiting.
So suck it a-holes on LRC. You aren't going to like it when you get bad meat (well maybe some of you will like it), or when a plane crashes or you have to wait in line at the airport for six hours to get on a plane.
It isn't effecting me at all. For all I knew it was back up and running. All of the necessary things are still functioning, state government is still working which takes care of many of the important things. Local stuff is all working. I'm not really sure what isn't being tended to. I see propaganda of federal parks with trash bins that are overfilled. If that's the worst thing, why can't people just keep their trash in a bag and throw it away somewhere else?
If you've got a 'non-essential' federal job and are out of work right now, maybe consider getting a different job.
Traffic is better because I live in an area of a lot of federal workers.
If we can get unemployment up over 25% (and I kept my job) I would be breezing along.

Has illustrated the bloated governmental system. Go work in a VA and witness firsthand the waste, and you'll never want to pay taxes again.
Government shuts down all the time...not a big deal. It will re open in a few weeks or months. No ones really cares about federal employees or humans in general; I have a District of Columbia drivers license and went to school with some of the richest people in the world!
I wasn't really affected at all until I tried to run one of my predictive models. It errored out and I spent an hour troubleshooting. The model imports weather data for various cities around the US. I pull the data from the NOAA website which is shut down right now. So, my model is unable to pull in the data. I should have built my own db.
Well since this is a first as the federal government has never shut down, how could I have known this could happen. U predict marginalized children will go hungry and temperatures will sky rocket. Sad.
Our family trip to DC was pretty lame without the ability to visit the White House or the Smithsonians
Most federal workers are still working, just not getting paid. (how is that even legal?) I'm not going to really notice if they are still working.

It's hard to notice any change from your mom's basement. I understand.

Excellent argument for privatization of like, 80% of federal government activities. I mean are you arguing that planes don't crash under the current system or something? I'm pretty sure the airline industry can figure out the logistics of plane travel, and they would have an actual financial interest in making sure planes aren't crashing all the time. And they certainly can do a better job than the TSA when it comes to lines at the airport. What a joke, like the TSA is the model of efficiency.

Sure, good question. No one needs to go anywhere to point a camera at the sky and take a photo of the moon, at least when it's high in the sky. But those photos aren't of my interest anyway and no one will pay you for them.
The best moon photos are shot from low angles, with very large lenses. They incorporate mountains, sand dunes, cityscapes, whatever.
I find your photography ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Don't rely on government assistance. Work more than one job if necessary, and live within your means. Problem solved.
Shortly before the shutdown, I went out to eat with my dad when I was visiting. We were about done with dinner and a family sat at the table next to us. They started talking about the shutdown and was worried about the effects of a long shut down and not getting paid. Man, woman and two kids. Woman was doing most of the talking and rather loudly.
After paying the bill and after a couple of minutes of having to listen to this, my dad, a 70 year old, diehard Republican (of which I am NOT) gets up, puts his coat on, walks over and says "If you're really that worried about money during a shutdown, why are you going out to eat?"
The guy instantly says something to my dad about listening to their convo. My dad, calm as anything says "Listening? Half the restaurant probably heard the conversation. Next time use your indoor voices" and turns and walks away. I'm just standing near him a few feet away the whole time. The guy from the family gets up, I look at him and say "What are you going to do? You and I both know he's right" and turn around and leave.
I do feel bad the people affected are just yet another casualty of political bickering.
The reason that family (the man and the woman) were talking loudly is that they were hoping to SCAM you or anyone else who heard them into paying for their dinner, and of course they needed you to hear them. Anytime, and I mean ANYTIME you overhear someone talking about their financial difficulties, they are trying to get someone to give them money.
