Gary is worse than Rockford.
Not sure it even qualifies as a city but Ashland KY is an abomination.

Feces literally runs down the street in SF. It is truly a disgusting place to visit, and not just because of the liberal bias.
Better to visit a good, Christian, Conservative, Southern Town like Birmingham or Charleston.

I love my Ravens, but come on now, Baltimore is skankybad. Ugh.
It's been awhile since I've been to Detroit, but yeah they'd compete with Balmer. As would half the damn state of Joisey.
I forgot about Richmond VA. Also horrible. It's the mini-Balmer of the south.
Downtown Atlanta is freakin' heavin compared to half the megalopoli in the states. Portland is too.

I was going to say this after living there for a long time, but at least you have the river and the Arch in the background. Sacramento is bad. Downtown LA is awful. But Houston takes the cake as the WORST.
Southwest Portland is nothing but block after block of pretentious red (fake?) brick buildings with no indication of who or what occupies them above the first floor. Every block looks exactly the same. It has absolutely no character at all. Yes that's ugly.
That's beyond the general ugliness inherent in all sizeable port cities. Can't have docks without crappy blocks.
Utah is one of the most beautiful states, which makes Salt Lake City even more grotesque with the Beige-Box "architecture" turdsplashing up onto the Wasatch
Birmingham is a nice city but is hardly conservative any more. In fact, I’d call it one of the most progressive cities in the South.

Yeah, I think you're right about Gary being worse. I said Rockford out of recency bias, but Gary is truly awful. Northwest Indiana as a whole is terrible.

Fellow Clevelander here. As soon as I saw the thread name, I just went through to see if we were named. I'll admit that 10 years ago we should have topped this list, but not anymore.
We still have pockets that need updated, but between the flats, E4th, the towpath, and public square. We have come a long ways.
I lived in Cleveland (the mistake on the lake as it was called in those days) when Dennis Kucinich was mayor, moved there from Akron to go to grad school after my undergrad at U of A. In those days it was like the wild west. Went to the inaugural '10 cent" beer night at an Indians game, last time they ever did it I believe. Lucky to have gotten out of there with my life. Used to go to the flats to party on the weekends, to the Mad Hatter mostly. Downtown was a disaster. I finally threw in the towel when a huge snowstorm closed the city, which went belly up a few months later. Kucinich was actually driving plows to clear the streets. Got on a bus to LA, never went back except to visit family in the Akron area. Opened up a copy of the LA times one day not long after after I got to LA, there's was a picture of Kucinich's brother robbing a bank there. I have flown through Cleveland on several occasions, and from what I see and hear, the area has been revitalized and is booming these days.
For a running website, I'm surprised Portland get so much hate. The running is fantastic, views of Hood are dramatic, and the bridges actually have character... and the adult industry
anything in Ohio

I agree.
Not sure what year it was when you stayed in Buffalo but maybe you didn't get out of your hotel room much.
The waterfront in downtown Buffalo has come along ways with paths, parks and trails some great running places.
Downtown has its share of historical buildings and houses.
The last few years has seen a great jump in employment, new buildings and renovation of older properties.
Great city and suburbs for runners.
Maybe you didn't get to run in any of the 375 local road races they have during racing seasons every year.
Or maybe you did compete in some of their races and were beaten and at the finish line you were given the old Gobble-Gobble MF'r and now you're just butt-hurt and don't like the "City of Good Neibors"
Spent quite a bit of time in Cleveland. Both visiting and traveling through it. Although it does have some good beer (Masthead Brewing company, Hofbrauhaus, and Great Lakes Brewing) and the area around the sports venues are updated.....much of the outlying areas are run down and in desperate need of help.

Ever been to downtown Memphis?
Aesthetically speaking Memphis isn't bad at all.

I have to agree. The state is beautiful. Just get rid of all the bland, Caucasian, Joseph Smith lovers and the city would be better
If you've been to Chattanooga since 2015 you'd probably change your mind.
Camden is a dump but it’s small, not even a proper city.
However Camden has produced many great athletes.
The waterfront area is actually quite nice though, aquarium, amphitheater stadium etc
