I would use Daniels’ Running Formula as a guide to construct my training. I would target improvement at 5k/10k this year. I think moving straight to marathoning would be a mistake.

Well count me in.....if all goes well I'll be running a 2 fitty low on a hilly course this Spring at age 34. What are my odds of getting to OTQ?
Count me in as well; I have lifetime bests of 1:52 / 3:53 (800m / 1500m ). I started running again and am hoping to get an OTQ for 2024. I recently ran a 17:00 5k, so very far away right now, but I've only averaged 28 mpw so far.
Keeping this thread open - would love to hear how everyone's training is going! Hit 53 miles this week.
I'm in too. With the added motivation that I may be able to qualify outright for a major championship with a B standard through dual citizenship with a lesser athletics nation.
I haven't raced in years and took some time away from the sport. I was probably in 1:12-1:15 half shape a few years ago. Averaged 0-15 mpw the last year or so, nothing structured.
I'll first aim to hit consistent mileage, repeats around 5/mile, and tempos between 5 and 5:30/mile. I am much stronger - both muscular and endurance - since I last raced so I will try to turn that into speed and efficiency at pace. Casual track races this summer and maybe some road racing or hard 20 mile efforts will give me an indication of what is possible.
Ran a 19 miler this week on a whim, felt pretty good and hammered the last 5 miles. I'll keep them under 16 miles until I can stay very comfortable at 6 flat pace.
No need for obsession or meticulous training at this point so long as all the basics are covered. No single week, month, or workout is important but the continuous process must become casually routine. I'll run kind of fast when not tired, pretty fast and long when feeling good, and very very easy when tired.
Sounds easy enough. I’ll sign up too.
I'd focus on the 10km/half and trying to get those PRs down...but on consistent high mileage....for years...
I think a lot of people don't realize how hard it is to knock those last 10-min off and go from a 2:30 to a 2:20. It's not like going from 2:50 to 2:40.
And yes, current OTQ pace (for the sub 2:19:00) is 5:18 pace/mile. 5:20 only gets you 2:20:00.
Agreed.

Thanks for the advice - I'm currently working to get to 60 mpw and then I'll get into 5k/10k training.
Forgot to add a bit of context to my bid.
My PRs as of now are 34:55 10k / 1:15 HM/ 2:50 full
Been running for 17ish years but a bit more seriously for the past year and a half or so
I set those PRs in Jan 2018 (10k), March 2018 (HM) and April 2018 (full). My PR for 10k in July 2017 was 43min, just to show I really hadn’t been serious before that.
I averaged about 40mpw coming into the marathon, and really didn’t train much the second half of last year as I moved countries twice, twisted my ankle and changed jobs. Picked it up again in December, got a coach and am hoping to maintain some consistency and see what happens. I figure I can race about 6-7kg lighter than I ran those races too.
I have a 10k scheduled for feb, a HM in March and Rotterdam full in April. I’ll post the results here.
Also I’m not from the US sand my country doesn’t have Olympic trials, so all I want is the thrill of hitting the Olympic standard :)

I think her outfit looks ridiculous
dude honestly your just slow....most high schoolers run faster than this chief
The 1:15 half off of around 40 mpw is pretty impressive - this is better than the 10k and marathon based on running calculators. In addition, losing 6 kg should make a pretty big difference.
I think I'm in shape to run 1:17/1:18 right now so you are at least a couple of minutes ahead of me. I do have a PR of 1:10 that I ran a couple of years after college.
Looking forward to hearing your results!
I'm aiming for 1:17 in March in a HM. I won't be too frustrated if I run slow since I'm just doing base training per Daniels, with strides 3x per week and some supplemental lifting.

This is very true. With a lot of very hard work and dedication a 2:50 guy can get down to 2:30. But it would be a an incredibly rare breed or someone that has trained completely wrong prior to the 2:50 to then get it down from 2:30 to 2:19.
What limits your chances of a sub 2:20 is basically your natural sprint speed and how you have been training. Pfitz 18 weeks maximum 88 km tells me you are far from training the best way. Have you tested an all out 400m or / and 200m?
- The Wizard -
First week of base training completed with 56 miles.
How is your training coming?
That doesn't sound right. Many on the U.S. all time list 2:08-2:10 seemingly had below average natural sprint speed.
Could Pfitz break 25 for 200m?
I’ve been at 65ish for the past couple of weeks. I’m gonna run 70ish this week I think. Feeling good :)
My case is different. I was a sprinter in college. Not top level. But have these PB's
100m 11.75
200m: 22.8
400m: 53
800m: 2:08
1500m: 4:30

LOL at comparing the American trials to the Indy 500. More like the Tuscaloosa Walmart dirt track series championship of the world.
Seems about right, nobody else in the world cares much about either.
Yesterday I ran my first race since I started training again in December. It was a 10k and I ran a 34:19 PR.
Next one is a HM in a month or so.
Curious if there's an update here
DietBacon is still an active poster. At least he can tell us how it went.
