wow. can she challenge the Africans over 5000m?
As a point of reference she ran 3 seconds faster in same low key meet last year (as stated in article) so think this is confirmation of fitness as opposed to a big breakthrough.
I wonder if her and her coach are contemplating a full move up the 5k. With her 820-ish indoor 3k last year i could see her getting down to 1425 or so in the 5k. Not sure that wins any gold medals though.

Depends, is caster moving up to the 5000m? At championship races she would probably be a contender in a slow tactical race. Other than that, unless she is capable of going in the 14: 20 ish range, I would say no.

Really?! Caster moving up to the 5k? Not a chance. And how often do women's 5k's at World Champs or Olympics ever turn tactical?
Semenya couldn't follow Ayana more than three laps.
He won’t break 15 minutes if he even attempts it. Dude is huge.

I don't know. Caster has the speed he just needs to put in the mileage. As far as when do 5000m turn tactical at world's/Olympics:
Past couple 5000m Olympics:
2000 olympic 5000m final for men was won in 13:35, which for elites capable of going sub 13 that is a slow tactical race
2012 men's 5000m was won in 13:41
2012 women's 5000m race was won in 15:04, in which I could see Muir be a medal contender in that kind of race.
Interesting side note, from glancing at the Wikipedia page on 5000m, women in championship races don't look like they let it go slow and tactical as much as the men do.

If you've ever tried training during the winter in Scotland, and struggled to avoid getting injured or ill due to the horrible, ever-changing cold, wet and vicious weather conditions, you would know just how much potential for improvement is there in just doing the same training but adding in some warm weather training, more rest and more time for massage, stretching, etc..
Admittedly Muir has the Emirates indoor facility to train in but that will only be for speed work, it isn't that accessible (times are VERY restricted) and the air quality is dreadful (although not as bad as the Kelvin Hall cough).
Stretching is outdated concept. Eliud Kipchoge can barely touch his toes.

Semenya never running a 5000m.

He won't run that distance a. and don't think he will wear bun huggers .
Note that this is Stafford's 5000m debut and a Canadian record by 28 seconds (somehow).
Has anyone else had a faster debut?
Pace-setter is an olympic triathlete ... made it through 3000m in 9:03.
Extremely solid.
Stafford's performance is actually more impressive than Muir's.

Probably a small boatload of East Africans, but I can't think of any others. Even Budd and Slaney debuted 10 seconds slower.
What is quite interesting is that her 5000 is now noticeably better than her main event the 1500 (4:03) and the 3000 (8:45).

Gotta correct you there:
She ran at the Olympics (5/10km?) and has since become a triathlete. Still a very solid runner.

Not sure 14:57 is better than 4:03. Will be interesting to see what her 1500m drops to this summer.
