Ironman events are around $750, and they sell out. So, it's less than half the price of an Ironman!

The blue pancho you get if you don't do bag check makes it worth it.

Ironman events aren't the same thing, that's apples to oranges.
I'm not paying $199 for a t-shirt. I just bandit the thing and get a solid workout with splits.

You're right, what was I thinking;)!!!!!!!
My friend ran once and paid. Quote "Never again!" It's a race with 100's of individual groups of women and really slow men. $199, no way Jose'
F, I qualified again this year, should have asked for this entry fee as my Christmas present rather than other stuff. Oh well.

Prove it.
Don't have to. I ran less than a minute ahead of the first female, Dani. I peeled off about 100 yards short and ran on the side till I was lined up with the finish line. Very easy and I saved $199 and didn't take any prize money from anybody.
Where exactly did you peel off to the side?
Where did you start?
Gimmicky course.
Slow course
Hassle at start line - hours freezing your ass off
fuck history and tradition
run Philly, Cleveland, Richmond.

Sorry, I was out running.
I started in the corral with the others. I stood in the 3rd row and got out clean. I peeled off to the side somewhere around 100 yards before the finish, maybe a tad longer.
Walked maybe for 5 seconds past several people who backed off fast probably thinking I was going to throw up or headed for the bathroom...I'm only guessing on that part.
Then ran down the side parallel with the finish line. Lead female was the only one near me (about 45-1 minute behind but everyone was screaming for her), I was in no man's land for much of the race.
Long sleeve shirt, shorts and no one would know one way or the other. Remember, it's dark at the start and fireworks are going off, it's madness. No one is going to tackle you there.
P.s. I go to DisneyWorld every year, so they get enough of my money;) $199 for a half marathon where there are very few serious runners, I have no problem with what I did and will do it again.
Yes sir, small grandstands on the left side and a few snake turns before the finish, you can bail at a few spots before the double fences. I'm not as fast as you, but I did the same thing last year. $200 is ridiculous!
Do the math on the entry numbers, Disney made millions, yes millions of dollars! It's really gotten out of hand. New York could charge $450 and they would still fill the field. Years ago we would have laughed at that, but now...it's an absurd reality.
Boston is $200. New York $300. Boston will continue to rise as well. Absurd is correct!
True the price is up there and they could easily make the runners cough up additional cash but the NYC Marathon would be worth entering even if the price was $400.
This is true if the crowds of spectators lining the course is important for you.
NYC has the most spectators on a marathon course by far if the weather that day is good.
Boston is a distant 2nd.
I'm not certain about London as I have never run the London Marathon due to their policy of not allowing Americans in the race for being Good for Age.
If running on streets lined with loud spectators is not your thing then the entry fee plus the long wait to start the race would probably mean that NYC is not a race you'd want to enter.
Personally, I will be entering again in 2019. You can save money by staying in New Jersey and taking the PATH train into Manhattan on race morning and the day before to get your bib number at the Javits Convention Center on 34th St and 11th Ave.
$2.75 each way for the PATH train.
$3.00 for the subway.

I'd take Twin Cities Marathon over all of those.

...Why?
Good tips, thank you. The expensive hotels are certainly another deterrent. But this seems a solid option.

True. When put in this context, it makes sense. I spent a lot more on beer last year!

Yes, but unless you live in NYC, the overall bill for the NYC Marathon will be a LOT higher with flight, hotel and expenses. The running fee might be the smallest of all expenses.
And I thought the costs of college and pharmaceuticals - both going up much faster for decades than inflation - was outrageous. But race fees are obscene when compared to yesteryear. Yet almost everyone on this thread simply accepts them - or justifies even higher fees.
I ran New York in 1981. Got 10th in the Masters (no 5 year age groups then, just Open or Masters). Race entry fee was $12. Yes, $12. And I stayed with my brother in Freeport, L.I. who also dropped me off at the start about an hour ahead (Verrazano still open at that time so no long, cold pre-start wait). So you young whippersnappers can laugh at us old guys who talk about the good old days, but I'd take that earlier, simpler, cheaper era any day.
