Since this thread is a few days old you probably won't see this, but YES you should run if given the opportunity.
I ran XC and track in HS and was not fast, 19.xx 5k senior year and 2:12 for the 800 in track, barely cracked 5 at 4:58 for 1600. I made a college choice based on money and academics and not XC or track in mind in February/March of my senior year. That summer at NSO I realized they had an XC team, contacted the coach, and was able to join the team, and I have gotten much faster in the last 2 years.
Our team has a few decent runners that come through, but it's a small school, likely similar to your NAIA school, and we aren't really very good for a college team. Our top few guys ran probably 4:30's for 1600 in HS, and Everyone in our top 7 can at least say they have a PR of 29.xx or faster for an 8k in XC. But there are guys on our team that probably had similar or possibly slower times than you have right now.
I can tell you that there are a number of schools in D3, Junior College and USCAA, and even a handful in D2 and NAIA that are WORSE than our team.
You definitely won't be the slowest guy out there.
Cheers.
