t think playing defense is a requirement. A better question would be something like, "do you try to influence your competitor's response or is your strategy influenced by your competition or does it try to impact your competition?" The answer to that question in all but the shortest sprints would be yes. An even better question is something like, "is there an official scorer or is it the competitor?" I would argue if the scorer is the competitor (golf) then it is not a sport. In real sports, even though the competitor may track the score, there is an official scorer/timer that overrides what the competitor thinks.
