With a solid 43 secs 400m, what do you think Michael Norman can run in the 800m?
lets say;
A= have someone pace him in the first 400m and let him run the last 400m by himself.
B= let him go all out in 800m race with other 800m runners.
thoughts???

He easily gets 1:44, w/ potential to go sub 1:40.
I laughed
His 200M PR of 19.84 is indicative of too many fast-twitch muscles for the 800. Warriner, who had 20.19 speed, would have been my pick as the 400 specialist with the most potential for the 800.
You'd have to figure out how he responded to Brazier/Solomon/Southerland styles of training, which from my understanding emphasizes low mileage, high intensity, and serious recovery. It's hard to say for sure, but he could definitely crack 1:50 if he paced things well.

What? Solomon isn't high mileage, but he is certainly low mileage. Last I heard he regularly runs mileage in the eighties range.

Pls reread your post and try again.
Lol why do we have to go through this with every sub 44 400 runner... I would guess around 1:50, even if he can easily open in a 49-50, he will rig like a fat pig on the second lap without the specific endurance training required to run a good 800m.

Because it takes a fast 400 to run a fast 800. It's only natural to wonder. Rudisha has run 45.50. Norman has gone 43.61, but clearly his 200 in 19.84 says he's not an 800 guy. Can Rudisha break 21.00 for 200?
Anyhow, I say Norman could go about 1:44.7 in a perfect race with about 3 months of specific training followed by an outdoor season. He'd probably open up around 1:49.
2:01

At which point (after the "specific training") his sprinting ability would be destroyed.

Has anyone in this thread heard of Alberto Juantorena? 400m PR of 44.26 and went on to run 1:43.44 for 800m.

Again, how fast a 400 guy can sprint 100/200 makes a difference. Although I don't know how soft his 200 PR was, a guy who I thought might be fast over 800 was Alanzo Babers who ran 20.82/44.27.

Also consider the athletes 1500m ability.
Can you really imagine Mike Norman running a 4:00 mile? Because that's the kind of endurance required to run the sort of world class 800m times being thrown around here.

I was only 4 years old when he won the double in Montreal- i did remember Mark Everett who won a WC bronze in Tokyo in the 800m and he ran 44 low for 400m -I can't remember many others that did well at both the 400m and 800m-those guys probably could do a decent but not great 200m since they would have more speed/endurance than the 200m/400m guys...

Rudolf Harbig and Marcello Fiasconaro were both very good 400m runners who held the world-record for 800m.
It doesn't really matter because 43 for the 400 is better than anything he could run in the 800, relatively speaking.
I'd consider ~1:50 a great result for him, honestly. The over-distance could be great for his development, guy is talented as hell, if only we could see him race a peak-shape van Niekerk
