Mexico City. The flight to Hawaii will be rough. Then you spend a day jet lagged. Another when you get home. 4 days isn't long enough to be worth it. Honestly I wouldn't go to either with that small amount of time. Too much of a hassle.

Ask yourself, are you a Trump fanatic or not?
Your vacation destination should probably match your political orientation.

For Hawaii, I'd be staying on the beach in Oahu in an Air BNB.
In Mexico, I'd probably stay near Polanco (the upscale area near the city center)
Hawaii would be nice for a getaway, but not that interesting. I'd probably do some snorkeling, lie in a hammock all day, read a bit, watch some giant North Shore surf roll in, but that's about it. Rest and relaxation in paradise.
Mexico City would be a bit more intense. I'd plan to check out some old ruins outside of the city, eat a few world-class meals for a 1/3 of the price that they would be here in the USA, maybe hit up some clubs. Weather should be very comfortable - low 70s.
I've spent a lot of time in Mexico City. Yes, it will be in the 70s during the day, but the 40s at night, so be prepared for that.
I'd suggest staying in Condesa rather than Polanco. It is just as safe, still nice, but more interesting. If you want to go to Polanco to shop or go out to clubs, then it is a fairly short Uber ride.
Bosque Chapultepec, which is close to both Condesa and Polanco, is a great place to run if you care about that.
The poster suggesting Tepito was joking.
There is a simple formula for deciding between anywhere in Mexico and anywhere in Hawaii.
First, do you have family in Mexico? If not, Hawaii.
If yes, are you poor? If the answer to that is yes, you stay wherever you are now.
If the answer to that is no, go to Hawaii.
You’ll see that the answer is never, ever, go to Mexico.

Wait, which troll posts are entertaining?

Wait, don't troll posts make up 95% of all LetsRun posts?
Age and knowledge of each is also important.
If you want to run in CDMX go to Bosque Tlalpan instead of Bosque Chapultepec. If you're going south to check out Tepoztlan, I'd recommend breakfast at L'arrosoir d'Arthur in Cuernavaca.

We have too many posts like this. If we want good threads and posts it is up to the
majority to put good ones in and point out the bad ones to LRC.
(I put xxx in your post by the way. Swearing is not necessary for anything.)

Not 95%. Realistically we get one bad post for every 2 good ones. So I'd say that
about 67% of those who post on LRC are good people. We need to get more of that group
to post and invent good threads. 2 of 3 = 67% for those mathematically challenged.
Hi, I live in México and I know a few things .
First, México city (CDMX) has a lot of polution, and its very cold.
In my opinión it doesnt make sense to travel so far if you are going to a big city that pretty much is like any other big city.
If you truly wanna have a good experiencie you should try Quintana Roo state, and make sure to visit Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, the whole Riviera Maya. You'll find a lot of tourists from all over the world and at the same time is not too crowded.
I mean México is full of very good places to visit, but you should stay a little longer.
And please dont go to "tepito" alone, youre not gonna get kidnaped but scammed.
Sorry for the english xd

What is your opinion of the Lake Chapala area, or San Miguel de Allente?
I travel a bunch (internationally and domestically) and Mexico City is my favorite city I have been to for being a city (I like other cities better for their proximity to certain hiking/camping/outdoor activities). Now I haven't been to Hawaii but I have heard the hiking there is amazing but would say 4 days won't be enough time for Hawaii. You can do 4 days in Mexico City and feel like you have seen a lot (not all) and go home without any jet lag. Someone mentioned La Condesa, that is a great place to stay (co-workers from Mexico City recommended that as a place to stay). When I went I stayed in Reforma which was also nice and a short distance from most things.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I'm personally not a big fan of Quintana Roo, but I do realize I'm probably in the minority there. For me though, too many tourists, too many pushy salespeople, and slightly overrated beaches (way overrated when the sargassum seaweed takes over). And if you are going to say Mexico City is "pretty much like any other big city" (I disagree), then I think you could also say Cancun, Playa, etc. are "pretty much like any other touristy beachtown" (I imagine you disagree).
We do agree about Tepito though. I think people acting like you are automatically going to get kidnapped or robbed and left naked on the street there are a bit dramatic, but a tourist is definitely a good target for some sort of scam. I went and walked around, but I didn't even take my wallet out of my pocket, since I wasn't in search of a bootleg porn dvd or any other junk they were selling there.
What part of Mexico do you live in?
Read this before going to Mexico:
Hawaii is amazing and a very unique landscape. I loved Kauai when I went - do the Jurassic Falls helicopter ride.
I go to Mexico City regularly, and often for shorter (ie long weekend) trips. I think it's quite a perfect place for that style of trip. I can leave work in the late afternoon and be there for a late dinner.
It will be cool at night in January. Bring a sweater and a light coat. The air quality can be dismal this time of year, as there usually isn't rain. So be prepared for that.
Don't go to Tepito.
Do eat tons of great food, visit world class museums, go to Teotithuacan if you want (can be done via public transport -- metro to Terminal Norte, bus from there to Teotituacan is very cheap).
BTW, I'm writing this from a balcony in Puerto Morelos, just south of Cancun. I disagree with going to Cancun, Playa, etc. They're overrun with annoying, fat, tourists. I'm here because of family, otherwise, I avoid this place.
Mexico City is at altitude so it may not be warm as you think. Hawaii would probably be more interesting. You just have to leave Honolulu and explore.
If you prefer not going missing, I would opt for Hawaii. Either location is a lot of travel for 4 days. If you are going to go that far, I would opt for Belize or Cabo, not Mexico City.

The OP should tell us where he lives. Mexico City is only 2.5 hours flight from Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, etc. 4 hours from Newark/New York. That's not so bad. But if he/she lives on the west coast, much further. Can't imagine flying to Hawaii for four days from the east coast.
I absolutely love Mexico City, one of my favorite cities to visit in the world.
Pros:
-The food is INCREDIBLE
-It's got gorgeous neighborhoods
-Love learning about the mashup of indigenous and european cultures to create Mexican
-Teotihuacan is cool to see
However... I have never been to Hawaii and would choose it in a heartbeat over Mexico City. It looks amazing there!
