All Shook Down was effectively Westerberg's first solo album. 14 Songs, Eventually, Come Feel Me Tremble, Open Season (Soundtrack), and Wild Stab are all very solid albums.
Does it get anymore Vanilla than the Eagles?
The mention of The Songs of Leonard Cohen was a good one. "Stories of the Street," "Sisters of Mercy," "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" are some unforgettable songs. Also: "Bird on a Wire" from his second album. His first two albums are classics.
New Day Rising is my favorite, but I won't argue against any of the others other than Land Speed Record.
Agree on Paul and Stereo/Mono.

Walking with Strangers is a terrific record.
Zen Arcade and Warehouse are excellent 80s touchstones. Let It Be is the sound of my early adulthood. Both are imperfect records, neither among the greatest ever.
Without doubt: Pink Floyd: The Wall!!! Not even close...
Some other mentions: Queens’ Bohemian Rhapsody and U2’s Rattle and Hum... Yeah, I’m the 80s kid, when big arena rock and watching MTV was cool, and fun, not this reality tv and sensitivity overload BS...
My top three albums of all time have all been mentioned already. It is good to see that others also have good taste.
1. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars by David Bowie.
2. Blood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan
3. Rock and Roll Animal (live) by Lou Reed
Another great album is Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare. He used the exact same band Reed used on the Rock and Roll Animal album. Good stuff.

Very true. Also interesting to see that those who need to list multiple entries, completely ignoring the OP, tend to post really bland albums which I bet they don't even really listen to.
Depeche Mode - Violator & Sofas
Queen - The Miracle
Peace out.

Dude, if you followed music you would know that was one album split over three artists.
Hmmm .... Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are three artist?
I'd still argue flip your wig. It harnessed that speed and energy of their hardcore days but mixed the pop side of their sound perfectly. They are quite possibly the greatest band of the 80s. They paved the way for all of the alt rock acts of the 90s and on. Highly underappreciated.

Which raises the question: in relation to works of art, is it fair to say their is a 'best'.?
I don't think you can.
A little while ago someone posted what is the most influential rock band/artist. That is more objective, isn't it, and arguably one band could be quite a bit more influential than others. But the best (album)? By what criteria?
At least a top 10 list leaves a little room for interpretation...
Guillemots- Through the windowpane
honourable mentions for Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet and Guns N Roses - Appetite for destruction but Herbie Hancocks Head Hunters is the greatest album ever.
AC/DC Back in Black
Ceremony, Rohnert Park

Also interesting that the one guy putting down other people's selections failed to post one himself. Much easier to be a hater than to profess to actually like something.
