My female inlaws love cheesy, sappy movies void of realism. They gobble them up regardless of their origin. But when they watch Love Actually and other films of that ilk with British actors, they go on and on about the cinematic quality of British film. In their view, Love Actually exemplifie's the cultural superiority of British culture in the Anglophone world (we are in Norway, however) It reminds me of a steel worker from Liverpool I once knew. He could barely read or write, and his spoken English reflected it. Yet women constantly commented on how articulate he sounded. He sounded like a loveable imbicile, imo, but ultimately, a British slant is often perceived as a mark of quality, regardless of how insipid the object of praise might be. That is somewhat off topic, but I had this discussion last year after suffering through Love Actually. I needed to vent.
