Since Republicans seem to hate government assistance so much, Trump and Congress should just cut government assistance to all registered Republicans by the amount necessary to pay for the wall. Problem solved.

I bet you anything that if Trump got Mexico to stroke a check that the dems would authorize matching funds. Trump should swing on down to Mexico and use those expert negotiating skills. He would look like a hero to all these super smart folks donating their money.

To build you need to own the land. It's either owned by the government or privately.
The government can confiscate private land —except for Native American lands. Private builders would have to pay through the nose for private land.
This is what I’m getting at. Large portions of the border in TX are privately owned. What is stopping these owners from building a barrier on their land using the GoFund me route?

I don't follow your logic. If the government takes the land by eminent domain, the owner is still entitled to receive "fair market value", but if the GoFund me money is used the owner turns it over for free? Most people want to be compensated for selling or renting their land.
Guys, the federal government CAN claim eminent domain on the privately owned land for the wall...however, the property owner also has the right to contest it in court.
If every private land owner fights it (and there will be no shortage of legal advocacy groups lining up to do this for free), it will tie it up in courts for probably years, given the appeals processes that will take place. Think about how many different cases it would be, how many different court systems, judges, etc.
Trump will (probably) be long out of office before all of this would be resolved.
These people giving their money to this campaign are just damn idiots.
Just a general question about GoFundMe.
Is there a way to see donations per day or per week? I would be interested both in terms of $ per day and number of donations per day. So far the campaign is trotting along at about $3M per day and 50K donors per day average. I am curious as to how long that rate will continue and how steep the drop off will be once the passionate donors have been exhausted.

Eventually it will level off and never become a significant number in relation the cost of the wall. Probably somewhere around $50 million which would be 1/500th of the projected cost of $25B.

The government has the absolute power to take land by eminent domain. The issue that could be litigated is the amount of compensation to be given to the landowners.

I'm not sure it will get that high. My totally unscientific estimate is that 50% of the total donations are now in. So $30M is my guess.

Democrats fail at everything.
I can't believe we're on the eleventh page and nobody has pointed out that Trump campaigned on a promise that he would make Mexico pay for the wall!

So a tech reporter represents both the Post and all democrats? I'm a democrat and if these guys want to pay for the wall directly that's fine with me. If the burden is evenly shared, Trump's 63 million voters will have to cough up $400 each.

Um, Trump's only asking for $5 billion, not $25 billion. Keep drinking the CNN Kool-aid. Either that or you really suck at mathematics.
Simple solution is to compromise in the middle at $3.3 billion and reopen the government.
Howuxh of trump's own money has he donated?
There is a reason the rich are rich: they aren't morons.

Why are you assuming that the owners wouldn’t be compensated using the GoFund Me route?
I find it strange that republican voters would tax themselves on behalf of the government. Doesn't sound very fiscally conservative to me.

No, the $5 billion is merely to begin the project. The entire project is estimated to be at least $25 billion. This is only the first round for the GoFundMe morans.
The $15 million raised is enough for about 3 miles of wall.
Which can be defeated in 30 minutes by any hobby jogger,
or anybody with a $10 ladder.
Meanwhile, we need more ladders.
