Hammer/Weight is not an event area. It’s one event. It would be like a distance coach that only knows how to coach the 10k and nothing else.
That may be a bit of an over simplification. The techniques used to throw the disc or shot (or javelin) differ more so from the hammer/weight as compared to the difference between a 10K and 5K (or likely the 1500 or 800 as well).
But, your point is well-taken - effectively coaching an event area is usually preferred to effectively coaching only one event - regardless of classification (e.g. throw, jump, hurdle, etc...).
