For those of you who don't understand how higher ed works: Emory is a big step up from Toledo professionally. It's a much better job. Good for Coach L!

Where are all these jobs that are supposed to be opening up?
Toledo just opened.
Why not leave Toledo? What is there?
Mid-Major Division 1--for the most part--sucks. Yes, there are Houstons and NAU's and Akrons and the Ivy's have their own thing. But the vast majority of mid-major D1 is trying desperately to qualify a few kids to the regional meet and calling that a successful season. Does anyone really care who wins the Sun Belt, Patriot, Atlantic-10, Big South any more than any D3 conference?
Also, the Head Coaches make about the same in both situations--under $100k for sure and in some cases significantly under.
So lets see: same money, same notoriety, less competitive relative to division, and basically same professional advancement opportunities. Oh, but you have one kid that can run 10.5 and the D3 kid runs 10.8 so you're at the "highest" level of the sport.
Exactly right. And in the case of Toledo, you have a program which does not have Men's TF. That makes it more challenging to recruit female athletes. Also, Toldeo has an indoor facility on which you can train, but they couldn't host any home meets. Contrast that to many of the D3 schools in Ohio which have pretty nice indoor facilities and you can see the challenges in addition to what others have mentioned about salaries, travel and recruiting budgets.

Wow!! This is huge!
It's not a move to DIII from DI, but I know a coach that moved from a bigger DI program that was fully funded making more money to a much smaller DI program that's barely funded at all. Even though it was a significant step down for them, it was a better decision for their family at the time. When you're a track coach, your significant other usually makes more than you, so you operate around them.
One of the best men and coaches I've ever been around!
This is the first HUGE domino to fall this season.

This reads like he was let go. Hard to believe
I think you are right except that it's a terrible perspective. That's not why Mid Major's "suck," it's why they are good in that way. And yes, it's equal to win your conference whether its D1 or D3 but that's because it's the nature/challenge of the job. Also......... and really think about this........ does anyone know/give a %&$^ who won the Big 10, SEC, Big 12 either? except other teams in those leagues? It's about best playing the hand you're dealt, in the game you are in.

He was indeed let go, and to be honest he's better off.
One of the hardest working, most humble coaches I’ve ever come into contact with. He still takes classes at ustfccca and the like. Even when he’s proven he’s a master at his craft. Here’s hoping he doesn’t just retire but gets a job deserving of his credentials.
Apparently no one is safe.
Scott Jones would be a great fit at Toledo. Spent some time at Akron and had success with the women's program there. Still very involved with USTFCCCA and has recruiting connections all over the country. Could get program back to Hadsell days?

Are "Hadsell days" actually a good thing?

If he was going to UNC, why didn't Pat Henry say that in the press release? He said "I want to wish Vince the best in whatever he decides to do."
Sounds like he was let go. That is a damn shame.
You aren’t safe if your sprint group does not produce. Past couple of years A&M has been very mediocre with female sprinters. This last outdoor NCAA meet had zero female spinners from A&M. If the General manager at a restaurant serves sub par food for too long, then he/she will be let go by the owner. No matter how great of a person they are. It’s a business and so is Texas A&M Track.
