This is kinda of off-topic but I think it’s a relevant question to this conversation.
We know that 80% or more assistant coaches make little-to-nothing, and we’ve discussed reasons why....
My question is what do you think is a “fair” salary for an assistant coach at the D1 level? If you meet the qualifications to be successful at that level, what do you think it’s a reasonable salary?
(What do you think is fair amount, not what you think you deserve) you can break it up into event disciplines if you want.
It depends on what level of D1 you coach at. I think if a mid-major assistant position is giving 55-65k per year that is very, very good compared to many other salaries for that position. Any head coaching position right at about 6 figures is great too. There are those positions out there at schools you wouldn't expect. If you see a coaching position that pays well it is not only a great job to have (obviously) but it is also signs of an administration that probably cares about the sport because they are willing to pay out their coaches.
A lot of you get really hung up on how much you can potentially make in the sport (not necessarily you who I am responding to). Any counter-argument gets hand-waved as narcissism. This is one of the many reasons why our sport is dying. Bitter people that are unhappy that others could possibly want a position out of joy to be coaching. Yes, some could do it at lower levels of the sport. But then who is going to coach the higher levels of the sport? Someone has to. Wouldn't you want it to be these guys who really just love the sport instead of the "narcissists" you all claim are lurking around every corner? Stop discouraging people so much and just post relevant info about coaching positions opening or answering questions like this.
For what it is worth, I don't believe a lot of track coaches value living a flashy lifestyle as the sport itself isn't exactly glamorous. What some might consider a little money can stretch a long way for some.
