So this is my first summer applying for coaching jobs. I recently applied for a job that had been open for roughly a week or 2. The job is no longer listed online but when I log into the school career page to check my application status, instead of it just saying, "In Progress", it now says "Application received, Under Review by HR". Does that mean they are actually reviewing my application? Or is that just a standard step after a job has been closed. Any non sarcastic help would be greatly appreciated!

It's probably a different set up at every school. Sounds like it's pretty clear and cut what they're doing with your application right now.
That’s the standard automatic reply. I’ve been at this rodeo for a while . Depending on the school/Division it never hurts to follow up with an e mail to the Head Coach or AD expressing your interest. If you happen to have a typed up coaching philosophy it might be good to share this with them especially Non Power five schools but more second tier Division I ,Division II , III and NAIA schools. The initial reaction of the AD and HC we’ll be annoyance...but they we’ll move you to the non trash/delete bin. Take it for what it’s worth.
I’ve been hired...fired...hired...fired ... hired traveling the track & trails for 30 years.
I wish you all the best

Any kind of change of status is good. When it freezes at something, you are done.
There's a certain art to staying on the hiring radar without making a pest of yourself. Follow up works better after an interview. If you haven't been interviewed yet, it's tough. It's kind of hard to balance showing desire for the job without sounding desperate.
A brief, polite email would be good, but be careful. They are going to look at what you say to get some idea of what kind of a recruiter you might become. This is like your first recruit project ... think like you are recruiting them.

Yes, get some paid experience ASAP. If you volunteer for too long, you are ruined forever ... because you go too far without learning recruiting.

Not completely true. I know a handful of volunteers who are countable coaches.

Hmmm.. those are rare occurances, but look at schools like Duke. Those guys volunteering have been there forever and show no signs of trying to venture out.
