O.K., he ran within 4.5 seconds of it once at age 27, then within 6.5 seconds at 28 and never within 8 seconds of it again.
Apparently Morceli did suffer an injury in early 97, and his brother died in a car accident a few weeks before the world championships. But he was still confident and was sure 98 was going to be his best season.
From the same website, interesting that Cram expected El G to run 3:41 for the mile after he ran 3:26.0 for the 1500m. I wonder if Cram really believed that El G could be clean at that stage?

Okay...so he was horrible & DNF'd for the 10. He also has a 7:26.62 (7th all-time).
And don't forget he's the bronze medalist in the 5 a year earlier at the 99 WC (where Salah Hissou took gold!).
Getting back to Sydney: Ali Saïdi-Sief took silver & Brahim Lahlafi took bronze in the 5 only losing to an Ethiopian (who have thought. Lol). So, two spots on the podium is pretty darn good for the N. Africans having to duke it out at every Olympic/WCs with those tough East Africans.
Kipchoge Keino for 1968 and 1972.
I don't think Gammoudi has the speed but he may get a medal.
I think Viren would have beaten Keino and won at 3000m in '72. He set the 2 mile world record just a few weeks prior to the '72 Olympics.

A slow race I feel Viren would not have the speed at the end to win though.
It would be unlikely the race would be at WR pace.

He was in good form in 2000.
EPO test? He did win the 2001 World XC Championship though.

Ali Saidi Sief probably would have won the 3000m.
Then get caught for doping haha.

Ali Saïdi-Sief was a beast! His 3000 PB is 3rd fastest all-time!...so he should definitely be in the running. There's all this talk about Morceli when Ali Saïdi-Sief shouldn't be left out - he's arguably Algeria's best ever distance runner.

El Guerrouj would have won in 2000.
Here is a good quality video of his 2000m WR.

Nice link, Saïdi-Sief was actually in better shape in 2000. He ran 3:30 in atrocious weather at Gateshead which Ovett thought was perhaps the best performance he had ever seen.

Agreed.
In a way, Said-Sief should have taken control on the 5000m final in Sydney, instead of leaving it for a sprinter's finish.
But Saïdi Sief was a convicted doper so I don’t see the point of discussing the possibility of winning a 3000m gold!? I mean, yes, he could have won, but as he would have been doped it shouldnt warrant any fanfare.

The idea is to consider what would have happened in the 3000m had it been contested at each Olympics, and I think Saidi Sief would have won in 2000 regardless of his later doping conviction. Sorry he’s not British bro.

C'mon Deanouk...I thought you were a sensible man? Do you know the scoop on Ali Saïdi-Sief's doping positive? He tested positive for the steroid nandrolone but expert lab analysis revealed that it was present in a supplement that he was taking (Peruvat) which was not in the labelled ingredients. It's still a strict liability infraction resulting in a 2 yr ban but it wasn't like he was flying around the track on rocket fuel.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Sa%C3%AFdi-SiefBtw, do you have something against the North African runners? You and your sidekick Coevett seem to bash these guys at almost every moment they're mentioned.
