Kudos to Drew Hunter for being as good as he can be, which is not the greatest ever, but which, at a young age, is at a rarefied level compared to 99.999% of his ridiculous critics. It's so effin' easy for us armchair runners, or anyone else, to criticize someone like Drew, who is climbing Mt Everest and is already well above 29,000 feet. He may never reach the summit, but I'm very happy to have him in the picture.
A runner shouldn't have to be the greatest thing since sliced Pre to be celebrated and encouraged. He or she may never be the GOAT, but is that a reason to spew caustic words at the athlete. Not in Drew Hunter's case.
Ooo, I'll play!
Guess which American these PRs are of:
800 1:51.69
1500 3:39.06
One Mile 3:58.80
3000 8:09.83
Two Mile 8:39.31
5000 15:05.21
The only list Pre is on top of is drunk driving.... oh wait, he apparently wasn't the greatest expert at that either. Shorter is still alive!
7:51 at 19 and 3:35.90 at 20.
If he can get into a 3:31 or 3:48 race, he may well go 3:33/7:39 next year. At his current level, the toughest thing is getting into fast European races when so many faster, usually doped athletes are out there.
Hunter just turned 21. Webb was 24 when he ran 3:30, while Wheating was 22. Centro ran 3:31 when he was 22.
You just are not going to find a lot of Americans with faster times for age than Hunter. In the next three to five years, he is very likely to get low 3:30s unless he bags it and moves up to 5000m, which is probably his best event.
So he is 35 ft from the summit. GREAT analogy!

I think everyone forgets that he's only 20 years old running 3:35. Give him a break. Stop with the comparisons. There will never be another Pre. He's the first Drew Hunter. Is he someone to look to as a next American Distance Prodigy? Yes! What he is doing at such a young age is incredible. His attitude towards training and the sport is something to be admired. If he was in the NCAA right now, he would probably dominate the 15 along with a couple top 10 XC finishes. Ease off the gas a little with the scrutiny and let the kid work.
Oh my gosh please go unbirth yourself now said: Pre had every American record from the mile up through the 10K and his times were from 45 years ago.
Pre' never held the AR in the mile.
when he died he held every outdoor AR from 2 miles to 10,000m, and the indoor AR for 2 miles.
cheers.
He also held the 2000 meter record when he died. 2000 - 10,000

It was a weak record. Jim Ryun could have took 10 seconds off of his time if he wanted to.
2000 Metres 5:01.4h
What shoes are those?

Guess which American this was?
800m 1:43.84[1]
1500m: 3:30.54[1]
Mile: 3:46.91 [1] AR
3000m: 7:39.28[1]
5000m: 13:10.86[1]
10,000m: 27:34.72[1
Pretty sad that Webb never gets the credit he deserves, those times easily make him one of the greatest American runners ever. On a forum that hypes times so much and bashes tactical races even more you have to wonder why Webb gets so much hate. Can never seem to please this crowd.
Also, Pre never held the American record in the mile, not even close. He had every record from 2k-10k, which is still an absolutely incredible achievement.

Webb gets tons of credit, while he was really only outstanding at the 15/mile, but this guy gets none - guess who?:
1500 Metres 3:34.25
One Mile 3:56.38
3000 Metres 7:34.98
Two Miles 8:07.07
5000 Metres 12:58.56
10,000 Metres 27:28.22
