Many are too young and ignorant to realize that their 'job' is to go get an education and compete for the athletic program. In other words, they are paid.

It is amazing to watch many walk-on's work extremely hard to get anything 'paid' for, but many scholly athletes have no idea that they are essentially employed.

Yeah the athletes take it for granted. There are 44 million people paying off student loans right now, student loan debt totals to about 1.5 trillion dollars.

You are getting a free college education to play games. You might have to jump through a few loops with the NCAA, but most people work minimum wage jobs while in college to help pay for it - and then on average they owe 37k after they graduate.

Scholarship athletes have it great and they shouldn't be complaining about anything.

That is a good idea, they are over 18 years old. Time to be treated like an adult where you have to earn everything you get. You have to earn your grades in the classroom, this is the same thing.

Too many scholarship athletes that are slacking off but there are so many restrictions to taking away/reducing scholarships that the coach can't do anything.

If a conference and ncaa point scoring machine, like the the uga thrower, was injured...wouldn't want to be the guy to tell him that his scholarship just dropped to nothing.

If they " banked point" from previous performance, then exceptions could be created. But the narrative needs to shift. An athlete's need to recognize the value the things they are given responsibilities they have in return for them. The pendulum has shifted too far in the opposite direction. significant majority of the student-athletes would not have even been admitted to their University if it weren't for their athletic abilities. They need to be more appreciative for the opportunity and financial reward they are given in advance of any performance

All athletes are cleared by the NCAA so most probably would have been admitted. I imagine that ND and Stanford lower the standards for some football players.

You made my point for me. Standards had to be lowered just to admit them. There should be an appreciation for that, not a sense of entitlement. And the clearing House is a joke. It is easier to be D1 eligible than d2.

Do you have an example? I am unaware of any so I assume that all athletes met the standards of their school.

Yes, plenty of regular kids with 1100 sat and 3.8 GPA get rejected from our flagship state school. Yet plenty of sub 3.0, sub 900 athlete's get admitted and get full scholarships. And pocket their $6k Pell Grant check, plus get $5k stipend. They want the benefits of being a student-athlete, but they don't want the responsibilities of the NCAA rules that come with it.

Every school will lower admissions standards for football players. They don't have to for every player, but every single D1 school will significantly lower their standards. No exceptions, not Ivy League, not others. Ivy League even lowers admissions standards for track.

Not only that, they get thousands of dollars of free gear/shoes, free tutors through the athletic department, free athletic training, massage, free travel to meets, the school pays the entry fee. Free coaching - most pro coaches cost money. Schools are even giving extra money on top of a full scholarship that goes right to the students pocket.

Heck, some schools out there will even get you a prostitute during your official visit!

Plenty is not an example. Until I see the stats of a real life example, it is only heresay that they lower the satndards for athletes. I believe the athletes may be below the average at the school, but I don’t believe they ever actually lower the standard to allow them admittance.

That wasn’t my experience with the Ivies. Two sons were rejected with 35 ACT and 4:15 1600. The ACT is above the average at the Ivies and the time should have been fast enough. Family is upper middle class and white. I can only imagine that we were in a much larger pool of applicants who didn’t have much to offer in the schools’ eyes.

4:15 is way too slow for Ivy League. There are usually 25-30 kids under 4:10 in the Ivy League every year. Some Ivy League schools wouldn't even recruit that. If they applied early in the fall, they were probably only 4:25 guys at the time they submitted their application.

In recent years, the Ivy League has started to be even more loose with admissions standards for top athletes. But you have to be really good - as in national caliber or very close to it.

No, those were junior times. That put them right in the mix of the incoming kids both years that they were applying. Coaches told them to apply but they got no assistance from them.

There will certainly be some confusion in the future if both compete at the world level.
