I assume when he said mistress, he meant "woman who sleeps with her sugar daddy/ financial benefactor" or something like that. Otherwise the question doesn't make any sense.

no.

No. A mistress is the girlfriend of a married man.
I don’t think of your mom this way. She does love it up the tailpipe though.
Need a pic to say for sure

Once on TV Barbara Walters and Oprah Winfrey were discussing the married men they were dating and strongly objected to being considered mistresses. It seems a mistress is a kept woman, not just the girlfriend of a married man. She provides favors to earn her keep and is hence a prostitute.

Kept Woman is the first thing I think of as the definition of mistress.
There’s a big difference between mistresses and prostitutes. A mistress is free to leave, she has the choice of ending the relationship. Or she can be the mistress of more than one man and she can choose which ones to be with. I don’t think we can call it “providing services”. It’s just that they want to live and not have to worry about money. Whereas prostitutes don’t have much of a choice. They have to work for every cent they make, even if they don’t like the person they’re with when providing such services. And there’s the escorts that work for an agency such as babesoflondon.com. There are many of them, agencies, that provide escort services. These girls are somewhere between mistresses and prostitutes. Not so bad, but also not very good. Either way, I think people are free to do what they like and how they like and we shouldn’t judge anyone based on their line of work.

This. It has nothing to do with money. It’s just a term for a side chick when you’re married.
