As an instructor at a Division 1 school, I’ve had a number of athletes take my classes. You get periodic requests for current grades during the semester, but I can’t say that I’ve ever gotten instructions from the athletic department about “proper NCAA regulations.”
Of course I know how to assign an incomplete grade, which seems like it would have been the accurate thing to do.
But this was also an “adjunct instructor” which means he may not have much familiarity with the grade system. My school has two different grades for incomplete - I can’t actually tell you that I remember the difference - I always have to ask because one causes problems for financial aid.
Let’s say I assigned the wrong incomplete, or did a grade change in the “wrong way” for a student in this situation. So then the student ant the team are screwed?
Frankly, I hope that this gets some attention at Div 1 schools around the country - and all instructors who have athletes in class are given resources on how to follow NCAA regulations.
Yeah, I have my own opinions on Oregon the team, but this is just a huge SNAFU that could probably happen at a lot of schools.
