Pretty impressive job by the Midwest group, but imagine if Conant Smith of Ohio had been healthy and able to run NXN as well, would have been even better.
(But, you could probably use that "what-if" for every other region as well)

Yes, you could. For instance: CA receives very few individual qualifiers; most choose Footlocker.
The Heartland did far worse than I expected.
Kids race too much these days.
We tend to burn them out by the time they are 21 or 22.

?
Most accept NXN invites.
On the boys side this year,
The #1, 2, 4, 5, and 8 potential individual qualifiers accepted their NXN invitations
The #3, 6, and 7 potential individual qualifiers declined their NXN invitations
On the girls side this year,
The #1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 potential individual qualifiers accepted their NXN invitations
The #2 potential individual qualifier declined their NXN invitations.
Do you really think this year was drastically different than others?? It wasn't. Most of the kids that are invited to NXN from California take the opportunity. It's one less race to run, and they've already guaranteed their spot at a national championship.
Cali runners on teams place 4th, 37th and 43rd also

Southeast runners had to choose between NXN and Footlocker, which means that most of the stronger individual runners likely went to Footlocker South. That isn't the case with the other Regions, where strong individuals had a real choice between races. It took a 188 speed rating (from Meylan) to qualify out of Footlocker South. None of the individual NXN qualifiers out of the Southeast Region would have qualified out of Footlocker South had they run the same race, since they ran 186-187. Interestingly, both FLS and NXNSE went out much slower through 2m than often happens. FLS finished really fast.
I recall Texas dominating Footlocker South, though...
And to make things worse, not all the best Texas runners were there. Guys like Alex Maier and Jarrett Kirk, for example, didn't run. Alex is pretty much the best runner when he's not sick, and Jarrett Kirk has won state / nike south previously.
