Completely agree. Maybe add the MOC winner from every state as a wildcard to really go crazy.

If this is supposed to be a high school team national championship, can someone explain why many of the teams run under a name that is different than their high school’s name? And then some singlets just say “New York” or something.
It is really hard for someone who does not follow HS XC carefully to read about some of these teams in advance on LR and then watch the race or even understand the results.
People are arguing about transfers and school districts and state championships, and to an outsider it seems as if they are not even running for a school at all.

It shouldn’t be that hard to understand, especially if you are on letsrun.
I can understand why Nike wouldn't allow that as well, but I don't think that would be all that bad. If your 'B' Team is good enough to run in the championship race, who cares? If "LV B" was truly good enough to get ~6th, that would have made the NXR meet more competitive.
And it's not like anyone's B Team is ever going to qualify for NXN, but to cover your bases, just make a rule that 'B' Squads aren't eligible to qualify to NXN.

I think as long as NXN gains popularity, fast young runners will be incentivized to transfer to these successful schools to get more attention and take a shot at a title.
Having coached and seen some of the other coaches I understand why some parents want their kids in a better program.
I see so many coaches who know very little (or they think they do because they can run a 1/2 marathon in 2 hours) and don't even try to learn.
When you think- MOST coaches (at least in NY) are teachers at the school they coach at. Now, find the person who wants to put the time in who also has the knowledge.
I coached for 20 years- 10 hour days- school to practice- were the norm. I planned workouts at home. Meets on weekdays- 12-14 hour days.
Most Saturdays 8-10 hour days. Yes I loved it and had a lot of great experiences but now that I'm not coaching- I love the free time.
If your kid has talent and goes to a school with a coach who (and this is real!) thinks less is more so running more than 2 miles a day is too much, you might want to send your kid to another school.

It's not sanctioned by the high school federation. Technically, it's NOT a high school meet. But, the teams have to be all from the same school.

Its doable but I could see where it would be annoying. Someone who casually read the preview articles, read the prediction threads and then looked at the results would have to start googling and cross-referencing to piece everything together, compared to the same person trying to do the same thing with NCAA XC championships. I guess there is little that can be done, but it would be nice to have the actual team names, especially when dealing with teams that are not frequent NXN qualifiers.
Imagine trying to follow the NCAA basketball tournament if the brackets and results used different team names than the name of the school. Sure people who follow the sport closely might not be bothered by it, but others who just tune in for the tournament would have to put in an effort to understand what was going on. And even that would be easier because the teams are all seeded.
I love your comment! You are correct, it is HARD, and takes lots of time to do those kinds of rankings for all teams.

I'm only slightly less a noob than you, so I'll try:
- a lot, or most state rules prohibit kids running as their high school outside of sanctioned events. Ironically, Nike prohibits super teams being formed that are not all from one school
- the east / west etc jerseys are the individual runners not with a team
- it's a little silly, like Loudoun Valley runs as the jungle tc for nxr (the cheering pit at their football and basketball games), and Purcellville at nxn (the town Loudoun is in). Ditto great oak as Temecula.
That help?
So speaking of good for the sport: a virtual meet program laying all this out would be much more inclusive if Nike wants to grow the base.
It is so difficult to do rankings that milesplit and others decided to do them for you.

Many posters want to get the best at nationals instead of the best from each state. To be consistent, you should also then support LV entering 2 teams and you should a system of rankings which would get the best teams to nationals even if they are all from the same region. LR posters are dumb.
What a dumb argument...... if you are not good enough to run on Varsity you don't get to run....... If your team is loaded so be it, deal with it. Steve Young was a backup, Bill Walton came off the bench.... if you are on a loaded team that crap happens. Can you imagine if LV tried that crap at the State Meet? Each team gets 7.... pick your 7 and move on..... sounds like coach does not want to "disappoint" someone.... should they all get trophies also... maybe give them all varsity letters because they would be varsity on other teams and that's only fair?

sooooooo you want close to 100 teams in a XC meet?
I think he is saying that there should not be more than the state champs at nationals, not necessarily all of them. But there shouldn’t be multiple teams from the same state. Otherwise you should allow LV to enter 2 teams if you just want all of the best regardless if from the same state or even same school since it is a club event.
Milesplit rocks wrote:

Yes, 25 deep, updated every few weeks, with varying accuracy and without a full committee getting together to decide them (DyeStat is done by one person for boys and one person for girls, I don't know how Milesplit does theirs but I doubt it's a dozen people coming together from around the nation with varying opinions). To do that for 50 teams, every week, through a committee of experts from around the nation (with the committee members taking time out of their day job to get it done), with everything on the line would be a whole different situation.
Not all champs wrote:

To put what mussibini said a different way, that is a pretty weak argument. Having a JV team that is competitive with most other varsity teams is a different subject than whether one state should have multiple teams at nationals. If every runner from a state would run on the same team at nationals, then sure you have an argument... but that's not the case. It's not "California All-Stars vs. New York All-Stars", it's "The best team in California vs. the best team in New York".
Almost any race with a free stream is better for the sport than just about any race that is behind a pay wall.

No. No way. Not even close.
The 3rd best team in CA could win several state meets easily.
Yeah, well look at Texas. The Woodlands boys have won the Texas State meet two years in a row, and guess what? They didn't make NXN these last two years because they bombed the regional race (against teams they beat at State).
I don't blame them for not getting an invite, because they were like 4th place. It just sucks that this happens, lol. They have had great success at NXN (obviously), as well, over the years.
